A Guide to the Dacia Duster

The Dacia Duster is a compact and outdoorsy SUV that focuses on simple, useful features and strong value for money.

Overview

The current generation, the third since its release in 2010, has seriously modernised its look.

Drivers can now also enjoy electrified powertrains and that rugged character that made the Duster popular in the first place. That mix of low price, useful equipment, and off-road ability has helped it win several value and best-buy awards in recent years; including "Small SUV of the Year" by Auto Express and "Best Value Car" by Autocar.

It's often compared with other budget or compact SUVs rather than premium models. Common alternatives people look at include the Renault CapturSkoda Karoq, and Ford Puma.

If you’re after a no-nonsense SUV with genuine off-road capability as an option, the Duster is a good choice.

Dacia Duster Interior and Comfort

Inside the Duster you get a straightforward, roomy cabin that's super durable and spacious. Controls are logical and the layout is uncluttered.

Rear-seat space is generous for the class and tall passengers usually sit comfortably. Materials are robust rather than plush, so the interior stands up well to active family life or muddy boots. Higher trims add more luxurious seat fabric, a larger central touchscreen and a digital driver display.

Practical touches include multiple YouClip attachment system - mounting points that let you use a range of accessories, such as a smartphone holder, a storage pouch or Dacia’s 3-in-1 accessory (lamp, hook and cup holder). The Duster also has roomy door bins and a phone dock.

Fold the rear seats and the cargo area becomes very useful for weekend kit or DIY runs. With the seats up, the latest Dacia Duster has an impressive 517 litres of boot space, increasing to 1,696 with the seats down.

Steps up the comfort and style. Better seat materials and more convenience features for daily use and longer trips.

What is the Dacia Duster Like to Drive?

The Duster drives like a practical compact SUV that was built with utility in mind. On road it steers like a nimble hatchback in town, making it easy to park and daily friendly. Ride quality is tuned toward comfort and robustness rather than sporty handling, so bear that in mind if you want to take a corner quickly.

If you opt for the hybrid you'll notice smoother, quieter starts in town and better real-world fuel economy.

Dacia Duster practicality

Space is one of the Duster’s strengths. Rear seats are roomy and the boot is class competitive. Folding the rear seats creates a large, flat load area suitable for weekend gear, flatpack deliveries or camping kit.

Towing capacity for braked trailers is typically up to about 1,500 kg on appropriate versions. If you need a vehicle for active outdoor life the Duster’s modular accessories and optional Cargo variant give it extra usefulness.

Dacia Duster Technology

Tech includes a central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone functionality on higher specs and a simple digital driver display. Dacia keeps the software uncomplicated which helps reliability and keeps costs down. Optional packs add parking sensors, an upgraded sound system and navigation.

Dacia Duster running costs and ownership

Purchase price is a major part of the Duster’s appeal. Prices are generally lower than many rivals and Dacia’s straightforward approach means lower depreciation in many markets. Dacia offers a standard 3-year or 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty across all its models.

Vertu’s Verdict

The Dacia Duster is an excellent choice for families who want maximum practicality and value without paying extra for a fashionable badge. It offers plenty of space, a comfortable ride, and the kind of durability that suits everyday family life.

For those who spend most of their time in town or on school runs, explore the Hybrid 140, with its impressive real-world fuel economy in mixed driving.

If your weekends involve countryside trips or rougher terrain, the 4x4 TCe model adds genuine off-road ability without compromising day-to-day comfort.
