Me And My Club - David Hembury

The latest in our collection of features linked to our sporting partners surrounds our ongoing partnership with EFL Championship side Middlesbrough FC.

David Hembury, parts manager at Vertu Honda Stockton, is a season ticket holder at the Riverside and discusses his love for the club...

How long have you supported Middlesbrough?

I’ve been a fan now for more than 40 years

Why do you support Middlesbrough?

They are my local club, and it’s the town I was born in

When was your first game?

It was when I was about six years old. My father took me in the late 70s and ‘Boro lost to Leicester City 1-0

What is your most memorable moment?

Going to Wembley for the first time with Boro to watch the Zenith Data Systems Cup final against Chelsea. We lost 1-0

What was your worst moment?

Back at Wembley against Chelsea in 1997 for the FA Cup final when Roberto Di Matteo scored what was then the fastest ever final goal after 43 seconds. We’d already lost the League Cup final earlier in the season and had been relegated a week earlier

Who is your favourite player to have pulled on the shirt?

Juninho. He was just so exciting to watch and scored some really memorable goals

Who is the player, or which is the match, you wish you’d been able to see in person?

I missed the 2004 League Cup final in Cardiff when we beat Bolton 2-1. It’s the only big match that I didn’t manage to get to

What is the best thing about supporting Middlesbrough?

Going to games with my son, and occasionally my daughter too, as I used to go with my dad when I was younger

Which rivalry do you enjoy the most?

Over the years I would have to say Newcastle as there have been some stand out matches, although we haven’t played them now for more than twelve years which is too long

If you could only ever win one more competition, what would it be and why?

After the disappointment of that 1997 final, it would be great to see ‘Boro one day lift the FA Cup

How proud do you feel to have professional links to the team via Vertu Motors?

I’m really proud to work for Vertu and my son always gives me a nudge when he sees our logo appear around the stadium during a match
