Mercedes-Benz GLE Awarded 'Very Good' Rating in Euro NCAP Assisted Driving Test
Euro NCAP’s new safety assessment looks to evaluate how the vehicle’s system and automated technologies perform, with Assistance Competence (which establishes how well the Driver Engagement and Vehicle Assistance work together) and Safety Backup being the two main focal areas.
The new Mercedes-Benz GLE can host either a Driving Assistance Package and a Driving Assistance Package Plus, which resulted in an impressive top Euro NCAP assistance score of 174 points (87% of the total score), against nine competitors from various vehicle classes, including two other vehicles from the premium segment.
The driver assistance package that comes with the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE has several functions that enable semi-automated driving.
These assistance features noticeably relieve the driver in many everyday driving situations.
State-of-the-art systems warn the driver in case of an impending accident and intervene, for example, through autonomous emergency braking to reduce the severity of possible collisions or even avoid them altogether.
Euro NCAP particularly praised the fact that these are cooperative systems that support rather than patronise the driver. For example, Active Steering Assist can support the driver when steering in curves, to ensure a smooth and confident turn. If needed the driver can easily and intuitively override the system at any time.
The intuitive and harmonious transition between system support and unsupported driving is part of the cooperative character of the Mercedes-Benz driver assistance package. For this reason, the Mercedes-Benz GLE received the top mark and first place in the ‘Driver Engagement’ evaluation.
It’s clear that the new Mercedes-Benz GLE ensures the best safety is afforded to its driver and their passengers, whilst implementing active assistance systems to make driving simpler and more enjoyable.
