The Countdown is on for the Volkswagen ID. Buzz
Back in 2017 at the Detroit Motor Show, Volkswagen revealed the ID. BUZZ concept, triggering an extraordinary global response. It was this positive response that helped drive the concept into the reality of a full-blown production vehicle.
Five years later, the time has come for the game-changing, all-electric ID. Buzz to make its debut. Premiering in just a few weeks, on 9th March 2022, the emission-free campervan will launch as the ID. Buzz (5-seater) and Buzz Cargo (van).
Expressive Design
The ID. Buzz has many styling similarities to the 2017 concept model. Drawing on inspiration from the original T1 Bulli, you can expect short vehicle body overhangs, maximal utilisation of space on a minimal footprint and an unmistakable V-shape face.
Although there are obvious links to the historic model line, the revolutionary ID. Buzz is ready for a new era, having been built electric from the ground up.
The new models are based on the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB). Both models will feature a high-voltage 77kWh lithium-ion battery which supplies a 150kWh electric motor. Official range figures will be released in due course.
The MEB platform has optimised space in both models, helping create a truly comfortable ride for drivers and passengers. The five-seater ID. Buzz will be able to take up to 1,121 litres of luggage – even with all seats occupied. The maximum load capacity of the ID. Buzz Cargo is over 3.9m3.
Charging
Using the latest generation software, the ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo will in time offer ‘Plug and Charge’. This will allow the vehicle to authenticate itself at many DC quick charging stations via the charging connector. Plus, innovative bidirectional charging will also allow the vehicle to store excess power from a home’s solar panels and feed this back into the home when required, for example, in the evening.
Innovative Technology
A broad spectrum of driver assist systems will be in place to optimise safety for drivers, passengers and other road users. Examples include the new ‘Trained Parking’ function which allows automatic manoeuvring into and out of parking spaces and ‘Car2X’ which gives warning and hazard alerts in the local vicinity.
Production of the ID. Buzz will start in the first half of 2022, with the full European launch expected in the autumn. Keep an eye on our Newsroom for any additional updates.
