The Land Rover Discovery Sport sits at the heart of Land Rover’s line-up, representing a super versatile, premium mid-size SUV.

Overview of the Land Rover Discovery Sport

Originally introduced as the replacement for the Freelander, it brings the rugged off-road capability the brand is famed for to the table, with a healthy side helping of luxury.

It’s one of the few SUVs in its class to offer genuine seven-seat capacity, making it a popular car choice for larger families. The model range includes the capable D165 and D200 diesels, the smooth P250 petrol, and the P300e plug-in hybrid, which has attracted particular interest for those who want electric efficiency in their off-road travels.

Where some SUVs may lean towards style over substance, the Discovery Sport is a proper car that can truly do it all - from the school run to snow-covered country roads, and even wading through up to 600mm of water!

Land Rover Discovery Sport Exterior

The Discovery Sport maintains the clean and confident lines of the Land Rover family, with a design that shows its rugged capabilities as well as its sophistication. It bucks the trend of more round and “bubble-like” SUVs in its class, with a much more upright  and square stance. It has a wide boot opening that provides a proper advantage for loading bulky items or even large dog crates.

Popular paint finishes include Carpathian Grey, Firenze Red, and Hakuba Silver, complemented by options like black contrast roofs, privacy glass, and black exterior packs that add a sportier edge.

The sleek LED headlights and taillights bring a contemporary feel, whilst subtle details such as the full-frame doors — which prevent muddy trousers when getting in or out — underline the thoughtfulness of the design.

Step inside the Discovery Sport and you know you’re in a Land Rover. Soft-touch materials and optional Windsor leather upholstery (borrowed from the Range Rover range) ooze luxury. Above-knee materials are plush and tactile, and the driving position is high and upright - offering excellent visibility and a true sense of control.

Tech-wise, the cockpit features Land Rover’s latest Pivi Pro infotainment system on newer models, paired with a digital driver display and touch-sensitive steering wheel controls.

The ClearSight rear-view mirror is a particular highlight, transforming into a live camera feed when the boot is full. Heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and ambient lighting options make it a pleasure to drive.

Practicality is one of the Discovery Sport’s key strengths. The five-seat version offers a generous square boot that’s ideal for family holidays, sports gear, or even pets. Whilst the seven-seat option provides two extra seats for children or occasional adult use on short trips.

The second-row seats slide and recline, so you can prioritise boot space or passenger comfort depending on your trip. The wide door openings make fitting child seats straightforward, and there’s ample cabin storage for everyday items. With its boxy rear shape, tall items like suitcases and boxes fit far more easily than in many sleeker rivals.

Behind the Wheel of the Land Rover Discovery Sport

Driving the Discovery Sport is every bit as calm and cool as you’d expect.

Its high driving position and excellent visibility make city driving and parking less stressful, especially with front and rear sensors, a 360° camera, and that clever rear camera washer.

On the motorway, the 8-speed automatic gearbox makes for a relaxed and quiet drive. The D200 diesel offers ample torque, whilst the P300e plug-in hybrid adds silent electric running for short trips and city commutes.

The Discovery Sport really distinguishes itself is off the beaten track. With Terrain Response 2, all-season tyres, 212mm of ground clearance, and a 600mm wading depth, it’s the only SUV in its segment that can genuinely tackle challenging conditions without compromising comfort or safety.

Vertu’s Verdict

The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a true all-rounder that feels just as at home in the city as it does deep in the countryside. Families will love its flexible seating, pet owners will appreciate the square boot and wipe-clean practicality, and anyone living in a rural or hilly area will value its winter-readiness.

Whilst other large SUVs in its class some choose either looks or efficiency, the Discovery Sport has luxury, technology, and proper country capabilities in one handsome package.

For those seeking a car that can really do it all - and look good doing it - the Discovery Sport remains one of the most compelling choices in its class.
