The brand-new BMW i3 premium electric saloon has been teased ahead of its proposed launch later this year.
The German marque took the opportunity to give a first glimpse of the eagerly anticipated new model to celebrate the completion of new manufacturing and logistics areas in BMW’s state-of-the-art Munch plant.
While you may need to squint at the images like a ‘Magic Eye’ picture in the hope it reveals more of itself, even with the mind-bending camouflage livery shrouding the key details, it’s clear the i3 will be a dynamic looking saloon.
It will become the second model in BMW’s range to get its fresh ‘Neue Klasse’ design language after the BMW iX3, which has already received rave reviews from media and public alike for its distinctive appearance.
The new model revives a nameplate last used on BMW’s inaugural electric car, launched back in 2013 - long before EV motoring had become commonplace on UK roads.
On that occasion, the i3 was a quirky, yet ground-breaking and innovative hatchback that carved a niche out for itself and helped push positive publicity towards electric cars.
The new i3, however, is unrelated to its namesake, adopting a profile that bears resemblance to the iconic BMW 3-Series saloon. As such, it would seem the i3 would act as an electric alternative to its sibling, similar to the current BMW i4.
As well as the fresh styling direction, the i3 will make use of BMW’s heavily updated electric running gear, which has also been singled out in the iX3 for offering up to 500-miles of range – a new standard in the premium SUV class.
More details and the first official images – minus the disguise - of the i3 are due to come in the next few weeks before hitting the road later this year.
