Birmingham Set New EFL Record Amidst Promotion Run
A hectic final month of action in EFL League One ended in positive fashion for Birmingham City, who wrapped up the championship title and also earned a place in English league history.
Going into April, the Vertu-backed side had moved to within four wins of promotion back to the Championship, and the first of those set a new club record of 37 wins in a season away at Bristol Rovers.
After Keshi Anderson hit the opening goal, Rovers put up a spirited display to draw level through Gatlin O’Donkor before Jay Stansfield netted from the spot late on to earn the three points.
A 6-2 demolition of Barnsley, in which Alfie May scored twice and also picked up two assists, moved promotion even closer after a defeat for Wycombe Wanderers – with a trip to Peterborough marking the first opportunity to secure a Championship return.
May and Taylor Gardner-Hickman duly scored the goals that saw off Peterborough United to confirm a top two finish, with the championship then secured without a ball being kicked as focused turned to the Vertu Trophy final.
Although that game saw Peterborough gain revenge for the league defeat earlier in the week, Birmingham would go on to chase the record for most points scored in a season; the first of which was secured with a goalless draw at home to Crawley Town.
That would be the final dropped points of the season however, with a 2-1 win at Burton thanks to two goals from Alfons Sampsted and Stansfield moving the Blues to within a point of their century.
A long range effort from Alex Cochrane brought up the 100 points against Stevenage before a 4-0 thumping of Mansfield Town set a new League One record of 105 – beating the previous best set by Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Goals from Ethan Laird and Alfie May not only saw Birmingham beat Blackpool 2-0 in the penultimate game of the season, but also saw Chris Davies and his side surpass the EFL record held by Reading and victory against Cambridge United in the final game of the campaign ensured the new record was set at 111 points.
It left Birmingham 19 points clear of Wrexham in the final standings, with focus now turning towards a return to the second tier of the English game next season.
