The new BMW iX3 has been named as Car of the Year at the annual What Car? Awards, giving BMW the top prize for the first time since 2017.

The second generation iX3 becomes the fifth full EV to take the award having been praised by the judging panel as a ‘truly great car’ that combines range, comfort and performance.

As the first vehicle in BMW’s ‘Neue Klasse’, the iX3 has been designed from the ground up as an electric model, with the previous generation having effectively been an electrified version of the ICE model.

The iX3 is able to cover up to 500 miles on a single charge and benefits from fast-charging capabilities that can add 215 miles of range in just ten minutes.

“We are truly honoured that the BMW iX3 has been named as the 2026 What Car? Car of the Year,” David George, CEO, BMW Group UK and Ireland, said. “This award is especially meaningful given its prestigious reputation and What Car?’s rigorous testing process.

“Like the original Neue Klasse of the 1960s, the BMW iX3 represents the beginning of a new era for BMW, bringing significant advancements in technology, range and charging capabilities, while maintaining the unmistakable driving experience our customers know and expect.

“We extend our thanks to the entire What Car? team for this special recognition and look forward to showcasing the innovations of the Neue Klasse across the BMW product portfolio.”

The iX3 also took the award for Premium Electric SUV, whilst the X7 took the award for Luxury Car.

The 4 Series emerged as the Best Coupe, whilst the M3 Touring earned the accolade of top Performance Car and the X3 was handed a special Safety Award.
