BMW has announced that the new X5 will be offered with no fewer than five different drivetrain options, including a variant powered by hydrogen.
The iX5 Hydrogen will be made available alongside traditional petrol and diesel powered versions of the popular SUV, whilst there will also be plug-in hybrid and battery electric options.
The decision to introduce a hydrogen powered model comes on the back of BMW carrying out extensive testing drive technology that has been developed in collaboration with Toyota.
With hydrogen not widely available, BMW will also work on a ‘Hydrogen Mobility at Scale’ (HyMoS) initiative to help promote the development of a wider refuelling network, with a pilot scheme having already started in France and Germany.
It remains to be see whether the iX5 Hydrogen will be offered as part of the UK line-up given the limited number of locations where refuelling would be possible.
The Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo are the only two cars powered by a hydrogen fuel cell that have been available in the UK in recent years.
“By launching the new BMW X5 with a choice of five drive system variants, we are once again demonstrating our leading position as a technology pioneer,” Joachim Post, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, said.
“Hydrogen has an essential part to play in global decarbonisation, which is why we are committed to driving the technology forward.”
