BYD has announced it is strengthening its plug-in hybrid line-up with the launch of the BYD Atto 2 DM-i PHEV.
The new model will look to build on the runaway success of the BYD Seal U DM-i, which up until now has been the Chinese firm’s sole plug-in hybrid offering and has proven a major sales triumph.
The launch of the Atto 2 DM-i means the compact-SUV will become BYD’s first UK model to be sold with the choice of either an electric powertrain or as a plug-in hybrid.
The BYD Atto 2 DM-i (Dual Mode-intelligent) uses what BYD refers to as a ‘Super Hybrid’ system, which the company says ‘maximises efficiency on longer journeys’ by cycling between various drive modes automatically.
The Atto 2 DM-i will be available with different battery sizes, but BYD states at least one of the units will be capable of driving up to 56 miles on electric power alone. Combined with its petrol engine, the Atto 2 DM-i will achieve more than 600-miles of total range.
Beyond the powertrain, the DM-i is largely unchanged for the full electric Atto 2 launched earlier this year with exception to a slightly larger front grille and a reprofiled bumper.
Billed as a rival for the Ford Puma and Toyota Yaris Cross, the Atto 2 DM-i will be notable as the only compact-SUV to be offered as a plug-in hybrid. To date, the class has comprised of petrol, electric or self-charging hybrid models.
The BYD Atto 2 DM-i is set to reach showrooms early in 2026.
