BYD Hits Production Landmark With Dolphin Surf

BYD is celebrating hitting a production landmark with the Dolphin Surf little more than two years after the model first went on sale.

Although the smallest car in the BYD range is a recent addition to the line-up in the UK and Europe, the car has been available in China – where it is known as the Seagull – since 2023, and has also been offered in Latin America as the Dolphin Mini since last year.

With the one millionth new car having now rolled off the production line at the BYD factory in Xi’an, the Dolphin Surf has become the fastest-selling model in its segment around the globe.

“The Dolphin Surf has set benchmarks and records ever since it was introduced, topping the monthly sales charts in its class more than 20 times in just over two years,” BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li said.

“We said at the car’s recent European launch that it’s a global superstar that breaks down barriers to the adoption of sustainable mobility, and we’re thrilled that a million examples are now on the roads around the world.

“Regardless of whether you know this vehicle as the Seagull, Dolphin Mini or Dolphin Surf, its recipe for success is pure and simple: an accessible zero-emissions vehicle that’s practical and flexible for everyday use in cities and beyond, and packed with BYD’s useful technologies.”

The Dolphin Surf is one of the smallest EVs on the market in the UK alongside the likes of the Dacia Spring, and also one of the cheapest – with the base model available for under £18,000.
