If you drive a vehicle through the Motability Scheme, you may come across Drive Smart, a small in-car device paired with a mobile app. It’s designed to help drivers understand their driving habits and to, in turn, encourage safer behaviour on the road.
How does it work?
Once the Drive Smart device is installed into your Motability vehicle, it works alongside the smartphone app using Bluetooth. When you take your phone with you on your journey, the app automatically records the trip in the background, without any need to manually start or stop anything. After each journey ends, the app analyses how the car was driven and add the data to a weekly driving score.
This score is displayed in a straightforward traffic-light format, making it easy to understand at a glance. Green indicates safe driving, amber suggests there’s room for improvement and red highlights specific areas where your driving needs improvement. The app looks at factors such as speed, braking, acceleration and cornering. It can also track if you’re using your phone during the journey.
For example, if a driver frequently brakes sharply in busy traffic, the app will pick up on this pattern and suggest smoother braking to improve their score. Similarly, if the driver has the tendency to accelerate quickly away from traffic lights, the feedback may encourage a gentler approach. The programme also includes a reward system; drivers who consistently maintain good scores can earn points and receive up to £160 a year in vouchers from popular retailers.
Get started with Drive Smart
Drive Smart is mainly introduced on Motability Scheme vehicle where a named driver is under 30, although all drivers listed on the insurance can take part if the device is installed.
Overall, Drive Smart acts like a helpful co-pilot, quietly monitoring journeys and offering practical feedback to help drivers build safer and more confident driving habits over time.
