End Of An Era As Honda Civic Type R Bows Out

One of the most iconic performance hatchbacks of recent years will go off sale in the UK early next year after Honda revealed that the Civic Type R will no longer be available in Europe.

Changing legislation around emissions across Europe have resulted in the decision to halt sales, although the car will still be offered by Honda elsewhere.

The Civic Type R was first launched back in 1997 with the EK9 based on the sixth-generation car, with a further five variants having been created since then.

The sporting credentials of the Type R have been evident in the car setting a number of front-wheel drive production car lap records at some of the most famous race circuits in the world, including the fearsome Nurburgring Nordschleife in Germany.

Racing versions of the car have also multiple titles in championships around the world, including the World Touring Car Championship, the World Touring Car Cup and the British Touring Car Championship.

To celebrate the end of sales, an ‘Ultimate Edition’ of the car will be made available, ten of which will arrive in the UK.

The car will be offered solely in Championship White with bespoke red decals across both the bonnet and down the side, with a painted black roof and carbon details throughout.

Alongside a series of additional tweaks to the interior, owners will receive a unique matching gift box containing a numbered emblem – from one to 40 – and a carbon key ring, alongside custom-made floor mats, and a car cover.

“As we say farewell to a true icon of the Honda automobile line-up in Europe, we thought it was fitting to give the Civic Type R the ultimate send-off with this special edition model offering our customers a unique opportunity to celebrate its legacy,” Hannah Swift, Head of European Strategy and Product at Honda Motor Europe, said.

“The industry is changing, and our model range is having to evolve with it in accordance with European legislation. However, Type R has always been Honda’s ultimate expression of our passion for driving excitement, and we look forward to celebrating its heritage in the weeks and months ahead.”
