The Vertu Primary Schools Cup has returned for a second season, supported by an expanded partnership between the fourth-largest automotive retailer in the UK and the Birmingham City Football Club Foundation.
The initiative was launched by the Foundation last year with the support of Vertu, with schools from across the West Midlands being invited to enter teams in one of two competitions; one for mixed teams and one for girls’ teams.
After qualifying rounds were held at the Knighthead Performance Centre, Finals Day saw the action move to the St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park stadium where St. John’s Middle School Academy from Bromsgrove won the girls’ competition and Our Lady of The Wayside from Solihull emerged victorious amongst the mixed teams.
The success of the inaugural competition saw the Vertu Primary Schools Cup being highly commended at the Global Football Awards for boosting inclusion in the sport at grassroots level.
For the 2026 season, additional support from Vertu has resulted in the Primary Schools Cup expanding, with a further 16 teams added to the girls’ competition to take the number of entrants up to 48.
That move comes at a time when interest in the women’s game continues to grow, particularly in the West Midlands region thanks to the ongoing success of Birmingham City Women FC, who currently sit in a promotion spot in WSL2.
In total, 1,120 youngsters are set to take part in the Vertu Primary Schools Cup in 2026 with the competition continuing to break down barriers to participation in the sport, whilst also offering access to first-class sporting facilities and the opportunity for competitors to create life-long memories.
Antony Isherwood, Birmingham City FC Foundation Director, said: “We use football to change the lives of people in our city daily, but it is only possible due to support of generous partners like Vertu.
“The backing for this tournament, and in particular the girls’ game is a game-changer for us. The matches are played on a pitch overlooking the Women’s team training sessions, so the inspiration for these girls could not be more visible.”
Robert Forrester, Vertu Chief Executive, said: “The Vertu Primary Schools Cup was a huge success last year, and it was fantastic to see so many youngsters benefit from the experience.
“The competition is all about giving opportunities to children from across the community and we are particularly pleased to be able to work with the Birmingham City Foundation to ensure that even more youngsters can take part this year.”
