The government has announced a tweak to the qualifying rules for the Electric Car Grant with the introduction of a new maximum price cap.
Although the initial announcement of the ECG stated that only cars under £37,000 would be eligible for the scheme, it was the confirmed that models above that figure would be included on the condition that an ‘interpolation family variant’ met the pricing requirements.
For that reason, the Nissan Ariya was announced as eligible for the grant in Engage, Advance and Evolve trims thanks to a revised pricing structure which brought the Engage spec car down to £35,000 when fitted with a 63kw battery and to £37,000 when fitted with an 87kw battery.
However, the introduction of a maximum cap of £42,000 means that the Ariya Evolve – which starts from £44,000 – is now no longer part of the scheme.
The change will also have an impact on some versions of models such as the Volkswagen ID.3 where additional options could now put a car above the £42,000 threshold.
