Kia has confirmed that it will launch a new hatchback in the UK by the end of the year, with no full electric powertrain option.

The Kia K4 will go up against the likes of the Volkswagen Golf and Vauxhall Astra for those who aren’t yet ready to make the move over to a full-blown EV.

The K4 will instead be offered with a choice of two petrol engines, with a 1.0 litre unit that can be paired with either a manual gearbox or is offered as a mild-hybrid automatic.

A larger 1.6 litre engine – available with either 148hp or 178hp – will then be offered exclusively with the seven-speed automatic box, with a full hybrid option set to follow in 2026.

“With the K4, we are demonstrating how our models can deliver dynamic design, innovation, and intelligent technology irrespectively from their powertrain,” Sjoerd Knipping, Chief Operating Officer of Kia Europe, said.

“The K4 reflects our mission to make exciting mobility accessible to all by supporting customers who are not yet ready for fully electric vehicles.”

A spacious interior will provide plenty of room in both the front and rear for passengers, with 438 litres of space in the boot.

A large panoramic display is home to the instrument cluster and the infotainment system, whilst the car even offers the option of a smartphone being used as a virtual key.

As is the case across the range, a varied selection of advanced driver assistance systems will be offered as standard that include the likes of smart cruise control, blind-spot view monitor and collision avoidance.

Full spec and pricing is expected towards the end of the year.
