Mercedes-AMG, the high-performance arm of Mercedes-Benz, has revealed a major technical update for its GLC SUV and Coupe.

By unveiling the new Mercedes-AMG GLC 53, the German company is in effect replacing both the outgoing GLC 43 and GLC 63 S E Performance with a new GLC 53 line.

The GLC 53, which will be available in SUV and Coupe body style, features a new 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine borrowed from the CLE 52 Coupe and Convertible, albeit with new camshafts, a larger air intake and new intercooler.

While power is quoted as 442bhp, GLC 53 also includes a 48V starter-generator – known as ISG - mounted in the gearbox that can provide an extra power boost of 22bhp.

Echoing the approach used with the similarly engined Mercedes-AMG E53, the GLC 53 gets a tuned acoustic character, with a focus on the response and sound of the new six-cylinder engine to provide a sensory thrill from behind the wheel.

Beyond the changes under the skin, the Mercedes GLC 53 continues to adopt a typically stealthy looking visual upgrade with understated rear spoiler, accentuated front bumper and larger alloy wheels.
