Mitsubishi has announced its support for Source London, a new scheme to zero-emissions vehicle uptake launched by mayor Boris Johnson.

The initiative, developed in conjunction with Transport for London, will establish a minimum of 1,300 electric vehicle charging points in the capital by the end of 2013, meaning the city will offer more charging points than petrol stations.

It is part of a wider plan by Johnson to improve air quality in London and cut CO2 emissions drastically.

According to Mitsubishi, which developed the UK's first pure electric vehicle in the form of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, such models are now "an affordable, viable mode of transport".

"Such schemes will help eliminate 'range anxiety' by giving electric vehicle owners the confidence that they will never be far from a charging point in London," Toby Marshall, director of UK sales and marketing, said.

Meanwhile, North Lanarkshire Council in Scotland recently purchased 12 Mitsubishi i-MiEV models in order to extend and improve its pool car scheme.ADNFCR-3205-ID-800559424-ADNFCR
