From October 2025, the Motability Scheme will introduce changes to the insurance excess applied to new vehicle leases.

The standard excess will increase from £100 to £250, while the excess for windscreen repair or replacement will rise from £50 to £100. These changes will only apply to customers placing a new order on or after 1 October 2025. Customers who are already in a current Motability lease will keep their existing excess amounts until their agreement ends.

Insurance is included as part of the Motability Scheme’s all-inclusive package, alongside servicing, maintenance, breakdown cover, and tyre and windscreen repair or replacement. The insurance excess is the amount a you as a customer must pay towards the cost of a claim before the insurance covers the rest.

The increase reflects rising vehicle repair costs and higher insurance claims across the automotive industry. Updating the excess helps the Motability Scheme carry on providing comprehensive insurance cover as part of the lease package while managing these increasing costs.

What this means for you

If you order a new Motability vehicle from now onwards, you will need to pay a higher contribution than current customers if you make an insurance claim. This includes paying up to £250 for most damage claims and £100 for windscreen repairs or replacements.

If you already have a Motability vehicle on lease, your excess will remain the same until your agreement comes to an end.
