Renault has become the first manufacturer to defend the Scottish Car of the Year title after the Renault 5 E-Tech was named as winner of the 2025 award.

The Scottish award is the latest to be secured by the all-electric reincarnation of the popular hatchback from the 1980s, which has already won the likes of the European Car of the Year crown and was named Car of the Year by both What Car? and Top Gear.

Success for the Renault 5 comes on the back of the Renault Scenic E-Tech being named as the winner of the Scottish crown twelve months ago.

“To say competition for this year’s Scottish Car of the Year was tough is an understatement,” Ally Ballingall, President of the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers, said.

“After a whole year, scores of cars, and thousands of miles, it all comes down to one decision and our judges said the winning car had to make financial sense in these tough times, but it also must appeal to our heart strings just as much as our wallets.

“The overall winner also had to be practical, capable, great to drive, and look the part. That’s a big ask, but the one car did it all and plenty more, and that was the Renault 5.”

The Renault 5 was also named as winner of the Small Car of the Year having scored well for both performance and practicality, with the 52kWh version offering up to 252 miles of range.

As with other electric Renault models, the 5 E-Tech is available with savings of £1,500 under the Electric Car Grant.

“It's a huge honour to become the first manufacturer to win the overall ‘Scottish Car of the Year’ title two years in a row,” Adam Wood, Managing Director and Country Head Renault Group UK.

“It’s a clear signal of the fun, accessibility and sheer style that the Renault 5 brings to the UK market, and, following last year’s success for Scenic E-Tech electric, underlines the strength and depth of our new pure electric line-up.”
