Renault says it is targeting a starting a price of under £20,000 when the latest version of the Twingo is introduced in 2027.

The Twingo E-Tech will be the fourth generation of the small city car and – as the name suggests – will be offered as a full EV when it goes on sale.

In line with recent additions to the line-up like the Renault 5 and Renault 4, the Twingo E-Tech will adopt a retro design that harks back to the original model that was released by Renault back in the early 1990s.

It will ensure that Renault has an offering in the A-segment market for small city cars and is set to be one of the most afforable EVs on sale in the UK alongside the likes of the Dacia Spring, BYD Dolphin Surf and the Hyundai Inster.

With a focus firmly on a set target audience of those people who are looking for a car that is suited to city life – as opposed to those who are looking for the largest possible range – the Twingo will be fitted with a lightweight 60kW motor and LFP battery that will provide range of up to 163 miles.

That battery can be charged from 10-100% in little over four hours.

One pedal driving as found on the Renault 4 will be available that will maximise regenerative braking when the accelerator is released, which will allow for smoother driving when in traffic.

There will also be up to 24 driver assistance systems depending on the trim selected, with the Twingo also becoming the latest model in the Renault range of be fitted with the OpenR Link multimedia system that has Google built in and offers access to more than 100 apps.

Although compact on the outside, the Twingo has been designed to provide maximum space on the inside, with multiple storage areas and a sliding rear seat that can either maximise rear leg room or increase the size of the boot.

The new Twingo will be built at Renault’s plant in Slovenia having been developed by Ampere – Renault’s subsiduary electric vehicle business – in record time.

“Our main aim in designing this modern-day Twingo was to recapture the bold spirit of the first generation, a compact one-box silhouette, spacious and modular inside with the playful, mischievous character that defined the first generation,” Paula Fabregat-Andreu, Ampere Design Project Director, said.

“Twingo E-Tech electric is bright and cheerful, with curvy lines and huge, impish eyes that give it a vibrant personality and a unique character in the automotive landscape. More than just a vehicle, it’s a true companion. A champion of everyday life, able to turn every journey into a moment of fun.”
