The Toyota Corolla - the world’s best-selling car - looks all set to receive a major overhaul for its next generation judging by a new concept that is said to closely resemblance its future styling direction.
Unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show, the Toyota Corolla Concept is a dramatically styled three-box saloon brimming with quirky traits that not only turn heads but will serve as functional innovations too.
While concept cars previewing future models is nothing new, the fact Toyota is assigning it specifically to the Corolla nameplate is telling about how close this car is to reality.
If so, there is much to unpack, not least the sleek profile, which has been inspired by the new Toyota Prius and has been maximised for aerodynamic efficiency.
Not only that, a glimpse of the Corolla Concept from above reveals a windscreen that not only stretches up and over the roofline, but it also merges deeper into the bonnet than conventional cars.
At the rear, a ducktail spoiler can be found, while the ‘floating’ rear window is disguised from some angles to give the fastback Corolla Concept the look of a conventional saloon.
Under the skin, the new Corolla will be available – for the first time – with a full choice of ICE, PHEV and EV engines and batteries.
Currently, the Corolla – both hatchback and Touring Sports estate – is offered as a self-charging hybrid in the UK but the 13th generation model is set to accommodate more powertrain options when it does go on sale in 2026.
Toyota Corolla – The World’s Most Popular Car
A model that has evolved steadily in the decades since the nameplate was launched back in 1966, the Corolla has assumed numerous guises across the globe since then to maintain its popularity.
As such, the Corolla you can buy in Europe has often differed from the one you can purchase in the Middle East and the USA, for example.
It’s this adaptability to suit individual markets that has helped the Corolla maintain its enduring popularity over the years with sales of more than 60 million units identifying it as the best-selling car of all-time internationally.
The new Corolla Concept, however, indicates that Toyota is keen to take the humble model in a bolder direction for what will be its 13th generation
Even then, there is the likelihood of regional variations been spawned off it, not least in Europe where it will be offered as a hatchback and estate only, whereas a saloon version is more popular in other countries.
