Toyota To Produce GR Corolla At UK Base
Toyota has announced that it will begin production of the GR Corolla at its UK manufacturing base in Burnaston near Derby from 2026.
The GR Corolla is currently produced at the Motomachi Plant in Japan alongside the GR Yaris, and is currently only available for sale in North America, Australia and Asia.
With ‘demand for Toyota Gazoo Racing products [having] consistently outstripped supply’, the manufacturer has now revealed that the sporty version of the car will now be built alongside the regular Corolla at the Derby plant – with the first vehicle set to roll off the production line next year.
It has not been confirmed however if the move to bring production of the car to the UK means it will be made available for sale on these shores, with a statement only revealing that ‘details of the markets for sales, production volumes and investment levels will be confirmed at a later date’.
“We are proud that TMUK, our first plant in Europe, has also been selected as the first overseas Toyota plant to produce GR vehicles, securing this expansion project for TGR worldwide,” Yoshihiro Nakata, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe, commented.
“We very much appreciate the historical support and recognition of the United Kingdom and would like to continue to contribute to UK society as a 'Best in Town' company.”
