The UK car market saw growth for the second successive month in June, which means year-to-date registrations are now up by 3.5% on the same period in 2025.

A total of 191,316 new vehicles were registered in June according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), which was a 6.7% increase on twelve months ago.

The growth was largely driven by an increase in fleet registrations, although the number of private registrations was also up to offset a fall of 15.8% in business registrations.

Just under half of new registrations were for electrified vehicles, although there remains work to do in order to meet mandated levels as manufacturers continue to offer discounting in a bid to hit government targets.

"A second consecutive month of growth for the new car market is good news, as is the positive performance of EVs," Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said.

"That EV growth, however, is still being driven by substantial industry support with manufacturers using every channel and unsustainable discounting to drive activity, yet it remains below mandated levels.

"As we have seen in other countries, government incentives can supercharge the market transition, without which the climate change ambitions we all share will be under threat."

Nissan On Top But Ford Lead The Way

In terms of most popular models, SUVs continue to dominate the sales charts, with the Nissan Qashqai being the top performing car for the month with more than 5,000 new registrations.

The Ford Puma remains the most popular car of the year to date having been second for the month, with the Vauxhall Corsa and the Volkswagen Golf the only two non-SUV models to sit inside the top ten.
