Yorkshire Women Enjoy Quarter-Final Run

The Yorkshire Women’s team enjoyed a run to the quarter-final stage of the new T20 County Cup as a fresh era for female cricket burst into life.

Running across May, the competition saw teams from Tiers 1-3 come together in a knock-out format, with Vertu-backed Yorkshire amongst those teams to enter at the first stage given their position as a Tier 2 side.

The first game in the competition would take place in Harrogate against fellow Tier 2 side Derbyshire, with the home side putting on a dominant performance to qualify with ease for the next round.

Going in to bat first, Lauren Winfield-Hill was the star with the bat as she smashed 88 from 52 balls to help guide her side to an impressive 205-3 from their 20 overs.

Grace Hall and Claudie Cooper then starred with the ball as they took three wickets apiece to bowl the visitors out for just 83.

That set up a fixture with Staffordshire at Sports Park Weetwood, with Yorkshire the hot favourites against their Tier 3 opponents.

Once again battling first, Winfield-Hill was in fine form for a second successive fixture as she top scored with 60, whilst there was also a half-century for Rebecca Duckworth as Yorkshire posted 176-3.

Yorkshire kept things tight with the ball when the visitors went in to bat, with Olivia Thomas the pick of the bowlers with three wickets as Staffordshire were dismissed for 108.

At home again in the third round, Tier 1 Essex provided the opposition but Yorkshire again took control with the bat as Sterre Kalis hit 83 not out and shared an unbeaten stand of 113 with Maddy Ward to reach 188-4 from their 20 overs.

Essex lost captain Grace Scivens in the first over and Yorkshire took control from there, with Cooper bagging two wickets in an eleven run victory.

Warwickshire would prove to be too strong in the quarter-finals however with a ten wicket win ending Yorkshire’s hopes, but it marked an encouraging showing from Yorkshire – who are well placed in Metro Bank One Day Cup League 2 early in the season.
