Spring’s sunshine and dry(er) roads are calling, but before you twist that throttle on your first ride out of the year, taking a bit of time to prep both yourself and your bike can make the season safer and more fun. Let’s get you revved up and road ready.
It all starts with a look
Start with a thorough wash and visual inspection. Cleaning your bike isn’t all about the looks; it helps you spot things that are out of the ordinary, corrosion, loose bolts, leaks... Anything that might need your attention after months of storage and hibernation. Take particular care around the chain and brakes where road grime can hide.
Stopping power
Next up is tyres and brakes. Check your tyre pressures as tyres can lose air in storage and check you have plenty of tread left. Inspect the sidewalls too, as old rubber can cause cracks in the surface, which may not look drastic, but they could be the difference between a perfect run and blow out. Ensure your pads, discs brake lines and brake fluid levels are all in order. Check that all the levers pivot freely, and the cables and fuel lines are in good nick.
Protect and prepare
After checking your chain is free of road debris, don’t forget to get it ready to go with fresh lubricant to protect it and help its performance, along with checking its tension. If you’ve got a belt or driveshaft, inspect per your manual’s guidance.
Safety for all
Don’t forget your electrical systems as these are vital not just for keeping you safe, but other riders and drivers on the road too. Test your lights, signals, horn and controls, replace any bulbs if needed.
Kitted to the nines
Your gear deserves attention too. Check your helmet’s condition and visor clarity and make sure your jacket, gloves and boots still fit comfortably and protectively. If you decide on new items, don’t forget Vertu offer great deals both online and in the dealership on all gear, whether you ride Ducati, Honda or BMW.
Breathe and enjoy
Lastly, while the memories of last year’s rides may be fresh as a daisy and you’re raring to start making new ones, remember you have been off the road for a few months too. Take it slow, refresh your hazard perception, stay relaxed and savour the season ahead!
