Best Summer Road Trips in the UK
Summer’s just around the bend.
The UK's compact geography and diverse terrain make for some pretty cool road trips. From coastal cliffs and ancient castles to misty mountains and quaint stone villages, here’s a guide to some of the best road trips across the UK, routes that turn driving into an adventure of its own.
England’s charming coasts and countryside
There's a huge variety of scenery across England. One day you’re gazing out over the rugged Atlantic coast, the next you’re meandering through chocolate-box villages and verdant hills. There’s a journey here for every kind of road trip lover.
Atlantic Highway
The Atlantic Highway snakes along the north coast of Devon and Cornwall offering wild, panoramic views of the sea. Starting around Barnstaple and heading down toward Newquay, this stretch of the A39 delivers on drama. Along the way, charming stops like Clovelly, with its cobbled, car-free streets, and the mysterious ruins of Tintagel Castle add layers of history and romance. Don’t forget to sample a proper Cornish pasty by the sea somewhere along the way.
Cotswolds Romantic Road
Further inland, the Cotswolds Romantic Road takes you through honey-hued villages and rolling farmland. Start in Stratford-upon-Avon and wind your way through Bourton-on-the-Water, Bibury, and Stow-on-the-Wold. Every village feels like a postcard, and with plenty of cosy pubs and antique shops, it’s easy to take it slow and soak up the charm.
Lake District Loop
For more dramatic scenery, head to the Lake District Loop for winding roads, dramatic mountain passes, and mirror-like lakes. Drive from Keswick to Ambleside via the Honister Pass, or circle Lake Windermere, where the roads climb through fells and drop into valleys. It’s a road trip for hikers, poets, and anyone who finds peace in solitude.
Majestic, remote Scotland
Scotland’s landscapes are the stuff of legend - literally. Every glen and loch feels steeped in story and the road trips are as scenic as they are cinematic.
North Coast 500
The most famous of them all, the North Coast 500, is a 500-mile loop that begins and ends in Inverness. It winds through the Highlands, where you’ll pass lochs, towering peaks, and beaches that rival the Mediterranean. Stop in Applecross for jaw-dropping views, visit the ruins of Ardvreck Castle, and walk the surreal shoreline at Achmelvich Bay.
Argyll Coastal Route
For something shorter but no less breathtaking, the Argyll Coastal Route from Tarbet to Fort William is packed with history and natural beauty. The road skirts the edge of Loch Lomond before entering a region of castles, glens, and quiet coastal stretches. It’s ideal for those who want a mix of mountains and maritime.
Isle of Skye Circuit
Meanwhile, the Isle of Skye Circuit is perfect for an extended weekend. Cross over the Skye Bridge from Kyle of Lochalsh and explore this enchanted island at your own pace. From the cliffs of Neist Point to the rock formations of the Quiraing and Fairy Glen, Skye is one giant photo op.
Wild, winding, wonderfully green Wales
Wales may be compact, but its scenery is anything but. With dramatic coastlines, hidden valleys, and two national parks to explore, a Welsh road trip is a beautiful escape into nature and heritage.
Cambrian Way
The Cambrian Way, running from Cardiff to Llandudno, slices through the country’s mountainous centre offering scenic drama and cultural depth. Travel through the Brecon Beacons and see waterfalls tumble through forested ravines, and stop in Machynlleth, a town steeped in history and a great base for exploring the Dyfi Biosphere.
Pembrokeshire Coast Drive
Over in the west, the Pembrokeshire Coast Drive between St David’s (Britain’s smallest city) and Tenby is a real treat. Cliffs drop into coves, seals bask on rocky outcrops, and every turn reveals another sandy beach or ancient fort. Take time to explore the coastal path on foot or sample seafood fresh from the boats.
Snowdonia Scenic Route
For mountaineers, the Snowdonia Scenic Route from Betws-y-Coed to Harlech showcases some of the best views in the north. The road leads through forested valleys and alongside lakes, all under the looming presence of Mount Snowdon. Castle Harlech, perched dramatically on a cliff, is a perfect way to end your trip with a peep into medieval Wales.
The myths and causeways of Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland’s roads are rich in legend and landscape, offering road trips that blend ancient myths with natural beauty.
Causeway Coastal Route
Start with the Causeway Coastal Route, a stunning journey from Belfast to Derry/Londonderry. This road hugs the coastline and delivers everything from basalt cliffs to castle ruins. Stop at the Giant’s Causeway, an ancient volcanic wonder, as well as the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge and the Dunluce Castle.
Mourne Mountains Loop
For something quieter, the Mourne Mountains Loop offers a more introspective journey. Starting in Newcastle, the route loops through the Mournes, often shrouded in mist, with rolling farmland and stone cottages dotting the landscape. Tollymore Forest Park, with its Game of Thrones connections, is a great place for a walk and a picnic.
Fermanagh Lakelands Drive
Finally, the Fermanagh Lakelands Drive explores a lesser-known part of Northern Ireland, where the pace is slower, and the roads feel almost secret. From Enniskillen, explore the maze of lakes, islands, and forest parks. Stop by Marble Arch Caves for a subterranean detour or visit the stately Castle Coole.
Get road trip ready before you go
Before setting off on a long journey, especially one that takes you through remote or rugged areas, it’s crucial to make sure your car is in prime condition. A bit of preparation goes a long way toward a smooth and stress-free adventure.
- Check your tyre pressure and tread, making sure everything is within legal and safe limits. Don’t forget the spare, if your car has one. Top up all your fluids (engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and screen wash) and make sure your lights and indicators are all working properly.
- Listen to your brakes. If they’re making odd noises, get them checked. Likewise, check the health of your battery, particularly if you haven’t used your car for long journeys recently.
- It’s a good idea to keep an emergency kit in your boot - include a torch, high-vis layer, blanket, jump leads, snacks, and bottled water.
Nothing spoils a summer road trip like your air conditioning failing on you. In fact, 97% of our inhouse technicians said air conditioning faults are the most common issue they see during the summer months! Half said they frequently deal with flat tyres also.
