A die-hard Cardiff City supporter has kicked off 2026 in style after winning a Volkswagen Golf R-Line in Vertu’s latest Car Giveaway – and his teenage son is set to benefit too.
Gary Williams, 57, from Cardiff, couldn’t believe his luck when he got the call to say he’d scooped the 22-plate motor after entering Vertu’s free online competition “on a whim”.
More than 36,000 people from across the UK put their names into the hat, with Gary becoming the second person to score a new set of wheels, thanks to one of the UK’s largest automotive groups
Lisa West from Durham picked up the keys to a Hyundai TUCSON in the inaugural Vertu Car Giveaway back in the autumn.
“I just thought, well, someone has to win it – I never imagined it would be me!” said Gary, who works as a Pensions Administrator. “My own car’s been playing up, so this couldn’t have come at a better time.”
Gary plans to sell his old car and use the cash to help his son Noah, 18, buy his first set of wheels. “It’s a real bonus for us as a family. Noah is as excited as I am when it means he could also get a new car!” Gary added.
The Golf R-Line is no ordinary runaround – it boasts sporty styling, cutting-edge infotainment tech and a dynamic drive that’s perfect for Gary’s weekend trips to watch Cardiff City FC.
“I’ll definitely be using it for travelling to Cardiff games. It’s a cracking spec – and the fact it hasn’t cost me a penny is icing on the cake!” he said.
Robert Forrester, Chief Executive of Vertu Motors plc, said: “We are thrilled for Gary. The Golf R-Line is a superb car, and knowing this win will help him and his son makes it even more special.”
The Vertu Car Giveaway will continue throughout 2026 with the latest competition now live, with the top prize being a new car from Vertu’s expansive stock worth up to £35,000.
