An ambulance worker from Cumbria is celebrating after becoming the third winner of the Vertu Car Giveaway – and enjoyed an extra special treat when he collected the keys to his new Volkswagen Tiguan.
Nick Kirkham from Kendal was selected from more than 38,000 entrants as the winner of a brand-new car worth up to £35,000, with the father-of-two selecting the Tiguan 1.5 eTSI 150 Match in Persimmon Red as his prize from Vertu’s expansive list of in-stock models.
Having entered the competition after seeing a social media post from the English Football League (EFL), of which Vertu is an official partner, lifelong Bolton Wanderers supporter Nick was stunned when he received the call to tell him he had been chosen as the winner.
Nick said: “It’s unbelievable to have won the Vertu Car Giveaway, I still can’t get my head round it. I’ve entered loads of competitions before but you never expect to actually win, so getting the call to tell me was a massive surprise.
“We had a bit of a rough spell last year that we’ve now put behind us, and this really is the icing on the cake.”
The handover of Nick’s new car provided an additional surprise, which helped to make the experience even more special.
Working alongside the EFL, Vertu – one of the largest automotive retailers in the UK – reached out to Bolton Wanderers to help with the handover of the Tiguan, inviting Nick to the Toughsheet Community Stadium to collect the keys.
Expecting to simply collect his car on arrival at the stadium, Nick and his family – father Geoff, wife Rhona, and children Erin and Ross - were instead whisked inside to be treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the ground, including a visit to the home dressing room before heading down the tunnel and out onto the pitch.
Once the tour was complete, Nick headed outside to be greeted by first team players Sam Dalby and Max Conway, who helped to pull the covers off the stylish SUV before Nick was able to get behind the wheel for the journey home.
Nick continued: “When we were told that that handover was taking place at the Toughsheet, we thought we would just travel down, unveil the car and then head back home. We never expected a day like this, with a tour of the stadium and the opportunity to meet Sam and Max.
“To have them hand over the prize is something we’ll never forget, and the car is absolutely fantastic. It’s so modern, and my ambulance doesn’t even have that much technology on it!
“As a family, we have to say a massive thank you to Vertu, the EFL and Bolton Wanderers for making a special day even more memorable.”
Although Nick is the first person to win a brand-new car through the Vertu Car Giveaway, two other lucky people have already collected the keys to their new wheels through the ongoing competition.
Lisa West from Durham won a 22-plate Hyundai TUCSON back in October, with Gary Williams from Cardiff earning himself a 22-plate Volkswagen Golf R in January.
The latest competition, giving away an all-electric MINI Cooper S, runs until 7 April.
Robert Forrester, Chief Executive of Vertu, said: “We’re delighted for Nick on becoming the first person to win a brand-new car through the Vertu Car Giveaway.
“Given the demanding work he carries out for the NHS, it’s wonderful that we have been able to work alongside the EFL and Bolton Wanderers to make the handover of the car extra special, and to provide Nick and his family with some unforgettable memories.
“We hope they enjoy many happy miles in their new car.”
