Ford has announced a new ‘strategic partnership’ with Renault that will see it introduce two new electric vehicles to the market, which could include a new supermini .

The new models will be based on the same Ampere platform as the likes of the Renault 5 and Renault 4, with the first set to arrive in showrooms by 2028.

The partnership will make Ford the fourth brand to produce cars based on the Ampere platform after Alpine and Nissan, who both offer models that are effectively rebadged versions of the Renault 5.

These include the new Nissan Micra, which is set to hit UK roads early next year.

Ford however will produce two models that ‘feature distinctive driving dynamics, authentic Ford-brand DNA and intuitive experiences’ and could allow the brand to return to the supermini segment for the first time since the decision was taken to end production of the Fiesta.

"The strategic partnership with Renault Group marks an important step for Ford and supports our strategy to build a highly efficient and fit-for-the future business in Europe,” Ford president and CEO Jim Farley said.

“We will combine Renault Group’s industrial scale and EV assets with Ford’s iconic design and driving dynamics to create vehicles that are fun, capable, and distinctly Ford in spirit."

Alongside the two passenger cars, Ford has also signed a letter of intent with Renault to develop a new light commercial vehicle for European use.
