Volkswagen has announced a revision to the naming strategy for its all-electric models which will see a number of familiar titles live on in the future.
With the exception of the ID.Buzz, Volkswagen has elected to stick with a numerical naming structure for models across the ID family, from the Golf-sized ID.3 through to the executive ID.7.
The ID.2 was set to join the line-up in 2026 but will instead become the first EV launched under the new naming structure, and adopt the ID. Polo title.
The ID. Polo GTI will follow with both cars set to appear on the Volkswagen stand at the upcoming IAA Show in Munich alongside the ID. CROSS Concept – which is set for launch as the ID. Cross in late 2026.
“Our model names are firmly anchored in people’s minds,” Thomas Schafer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, said. “They stand for a strong brand and embody characteristics such as quality, timeless design and technologies for all.
“That’s why we’re moving our well-known names into the future. The ID. Polo is just the beginning.”
New names will be introduced as each model evolves, suggesting that names like the ID. Golf will appear at some stage in the future.
