Vertu Primary Schools Cup Champions Crowned At St. Andrew's
The first winners of the Vertu Primary Schools Cup have been crowned after the inaugural ‘Finals Day’ was held at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park; the home ground of Birmingham City FC.
Vertu is proud to be a strategic partner of Birmingham City FC, a club that has a huge role to play in the community across England's second city. Working with the Club, we look forward to not only chasing success on the pitch, but also making a real difference to people across Birmingham and wider Midlands area. Together, we can have a positive impact on those that call Birmingham their home.
Birmingham City has a rich history that can be traced back to 1875, when the Club was first formed as Small Heath Alliance.
Founding members, and first winners, of the Football League Second Division, Birmingham City has gone on to win the second tier title on four occasions and also won the EFL Cup in both 1963 and 2011 - the latter after a dramatic last minute Wembley winner.
The Club also has the unique honour of being the first English side to both play in European competition, and also to reach a major European final.
Birmingham City is proud to operate under the motto of 'More Than Football', which is a reflection of the impact it has on the wider community.
The Club has its own Community Foundation that is committed to helping those in need across the city, and works hand-in-hand with Vertu to run the Primary Schools Cup. The competition offers children from hundreds of schools in the West Midlands the opportunity to play at the Knighthead Performance Centre, with the final of the competition being held at St Andrews.
The Foundation also runs various programmes centred around education, fitness and nutrition to aid the wider community, all utilising the power of football.
A desire to help transform the city is behind ambitious plans from Club owners Knighthead Capital Management to develop a derelict area of land close to the St Andrews Stadium into a new Sports Quarter.
Central to the plans is the Birmingham City Powerhouse, a 62,000 capacity stadium featuring twelve giant chimneys that reflect the industrial history of the city, and which will be visible from 40 miles away.
The Sports Quarter will also include training and academy facilities and a raft of recreational facilities to help raise Birmingham’s global profile and create a beacon of excellence for the local community.
