Burnley boss Vincent Kompany insisted there were plenty of positives to take away from the trip to Liverpool despite the Vertu Motors-backed side being on the wrong end of the 3-1 scoreline.

Burnley made the trip to Anfield on the back of a dramatic 2-2 draw with Fulham a week earlier, where a brace from loan signing David Datro Fofana had seen the Clarets come back from two goals down at half-time to snatch a point.

Liverpool would be a different challenge altogether however, with the title chasers looking to reclaim their position at the head of the table.

In front of a record Anfield crowd, Burnley started in promising fashion but it was Liverpool who grabbed the lead just after the half-hour when ‘keeper James Trafford failed to collect a corner and Diego Jota nodded in the opening goal.

Trafford then produced a fine save to keep out Luis Diaz before Burnley equalised just before half-time when Dara O’Shea powered in a header of his own to silence the home crowd.

Liverpool reclaimed the lead after the break when Diaz converted a deflected cross from Harvey Elliott but Burnley had chances to get back on level terms again – most notably when Fofana and Wilson Odobert both failed to find the back of the net in quick succession.

Fofana then slid the ball just wide when through on Caoimhin Kelleher’s goal before another Elliott cross was nodded in by Nunez to wrap up victory for the home side.

The result leaves Burnley 19th in the table ahead of a home game this weekend with Arsenal.
