Mazda has offered the clearest indication yet that it will maintain a presence in the compact hatchback space by unveiling a cute new concept, the Mazda Vision X-Compact.
One of two concept models the Japanese firm pulled the wraps off at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, the Vision X-Compact is approximately the same size and body style as the current Mazda 2 supermini.
With that model recently overhauled to phase out the third-generation petrol-powered model in favour of a hybrid-only range closely related to the Toyota Yaris, there is scope for a frugal new generation of the 2 that is independently designed by Mazda.
The Vision X-Compact therefore appears to reflect that strategy with the concept car sharing a similar design signature with the popular Mazda 3 hatchback and the soon-to-be-launched Mazda 6e family car.
Displaying a rendition of Mazda’s so-called ‘Kodo’ design philosophy at the front, the bold grille is flanked by illuminated chrome accents that stretch into the sharply tapered headlight design.
In profile, the Vision-X has smooth surfaces and a domed roofline that stretches all the way down the rear-end, resembling the Fiat 500. At 3.8m in length, the Vision-X is slightly smaller than the Mazda 2 Hybrid but is wider than the current model.
At this juncture, the Mazda Vision-X Compact remains a concept, so many of its boldest features – such as the protruding boot-lid and spartan interior – will not make it through to production. However, it is still expected to generate some inspiration for the future.
There is no clear indication of what could be lurking under the skin, but Mazda is known to be working hard on developing its electric model line-up.
Its first all-electric model – the Mazda 6e – will reach the UK in 2026, while the move to switch the current Mazda 2 to a hybrid-only platform suggests the new supermini will continue down this track.
The current Mazda line-up – which can be explored at Vertu Mazda dealerships - comprises the 2 Hybrid, 3, CX-30, CX-5, CX-60, CX-80, MX-30 and MX-5.
