Plymouth Argyle produced a battling performance in a Vertu Motors derby with Sunderland to secure a fifth EFL Championship victory of the campaign.

Argyle had endured a rough run of form following a stunning 6-2 demolition of Norwich City in September, with a victory against Sheffield Wednesday being the only win in the following eight games.

Sunderland by contrast had won two of the previous three games to end a difficult run of their own, with confidence high ahead of the long trip to Home Park.

The away side started the game strongly but a stunning 25-yard strike from Morgan Whittaker saw Argyle hit the front, with Finn Azaz maintaining his recent run of form to add a second just before half-time.

Sunderland started the second half strongly but were unable to find a way past Michael Cooper as the Pilgrims wrapped up a win that moves them seven points clear of the bottom three.

Argyle now travel to Coventry before a home game with Stoke, whilst Sunderland return to the Stadium of Light to play Huddersfield before a trip to London to face off against Millwall.
