Why and how the Motability Scheme Pricing is Decided

Every three months, the Motability Scheme updates the prices and options available for customers, but why?

On the Motability Scheme, you exchange your mobility allowance for a brand-new car, wheelchair accessible vehicle, scooter or powered wheelchair. Your payments are taken straight from the allowance provider, rather than your bank, to make everything as simple as possible.

Some vehicles on the Scheme require an Advance Payment, typically for larger or more expensive vehicles. This advance payment is calculated with the cost of the vehicle, its servicing and maintenance and expected value at the end of the lease in mind.

The updates to the Motability Scheme pricing generally (and the cars available on the Scheme) are to work around the industry’s constantly changing vehicle prices, as well as the supply and availability. However, this price also has to consider the variation of the other aspects included in the package.

Because the Motability Scheme lease includes more than the car itself, the varying costs and terms are to cover multiple aspects, including:

  • The price of the vehicle
  • The vehicle’s value at the end of the lease
  • Supply and availability
  • Insurance costs
  • Servicing, maintenance and repair costs
  • Breakdown cover
  • The cost of running the Motability Scheme

Additionally, the Scheme refines the lineup to maintain affordability and practicality for its customers, balancing a wide choice of vehicles to suit a range of different mobility needs and realistic budgets.

Motability Scheme prices are updated four times a year, on the 1st of January, 1st April, 1st July and 1st October.

However, the vehicles available can also change each quarter – this can be due to manufacturers updating their range, including new models or discontinuing older ones, as well as supply numbers. Lead times are also important to ensure vehicles are consistently delivered on time.
