The new Kia Picanto is one of the cheapest new cars in the UK to insure, making it a great first car and city runabout. A 1.0-litre petrol engine returns up to 52.3mpg combined (WLTP), paired with either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT. Three trim grades - Pure, GT-Line, and GT-Line S - span the range, each backed by Kia's 7-year/100,000-mile warranty.

The Kia Picanto's biggest selling point in the UK new car market is that it sits at the bottom of the insurance sheet. The entry-grade Pure with the 5-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) falls into Insurance Group 1E, the lowest band in the UK insurance groupings. For a first-car buyer, a parent buying for a new driver, or a second-car household watching running costs, that single figure can carry more weight than any individual feature on the spec sheet.
Beyond insurance, the Picanto is a five-seat city hatchback with one engine across the UK range: a 1.0-litre GDI petrol unit producing 68bhp, available with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. Three trim grades span the lineup (Pure, GT-Line, and GT-Line S), each adding equipment. Pure covers the essentials, GT-Line brings the body kit and 16-inch alloys, and GT-Line S layers on heated seats, a sunroof, and the upgraded safety suite.
Every new Kia Picanto is backed by Kia's 7-year/100,000-mile warranty, with unlimited mileage in the first three years, transferable to subsequent owners. The Free 7-Year Kia Connect services package is included across all three grades, bringing live traffic, points of interest, remote vehicle status, and Over-the-Air map updates through the Kia app. For a car this size at this price point, that combination of warranty length and connected services sits well above the segment baseline.
The Picanto's cabin pairs its city-car dimensions with technology usually found a size class or two above. All three grades get an 8-inch Touchscreen Navigation system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 4.2-inch Driver Display Screen, Bluetooth connection, and USB-C charging in the front console. GT-Line and GT-Line S add a second USB-C port for rear passengers, and GT-Line S adds a Wireless Mobile Phone Charger on the centre console.
On materials, Pure uses black cloth upholstery with manual front seat adjustment and an artificial leather steering wheel. GT-Line steps up to black cloth and grey artificial leather with GT-Line interior styling, alloy pedals, and gloss accents on the dash. GT-Line S adds Front Heated Seats and a Heated Steering Wheel, which on a UK car at this grade is a notable inclusion rather than an assumed one.
GT-Line S is also where the full-feature cabin lands. A Start/Stop button with Smart Entry System replaces the twist-key ignition, Illuminated Vanity Mirrors arrive for the driver, and a Sunroof with Tilt and Slide function opens up some sky over the cabin. For a city car, the GT-Line S flagship is one of the more comprehensively equipped options in the segment.
On the outside, the Picanto's design is pitched differently across the three grades. Pure keeps things straightforward with 14-inch alloy wheels, halogen headlights with bulb daytime running lights, body-coloured side sills and bumpers, and a matte black radiator grille with satin accents. It's the understated side of the range, suited to buyers prioritising insurance economy over kerb appeal.
GT-Line and GT-Line S share a more assertive exterior treatment. Both grades add 16-inch alloy wheels with GT-Line styling, LED headlights with daytime running lights, and an LED front light bar. A gloss black radiator grille, chrome beltline, and privacy glass on the rear windows and tailgate complete the GT-Line exterior kit. The GT-Line body kit sharpens the car's stance without adding much weight, and electrically folding heated door mirrors with LED indicators replace the Pure's fixed heated mirrors.
Seven Kia Picanto colours cover the range. Clear White is standard across all three grades, with Blaze Red and Midnight Black available across the lineup as premium options. Pure gets Smokey Blue as its own exclusive colour. GT-Line and GT-Line S add Yacht Blue, Astro Grey, and Adventurous Green. Blaze Red is probably the pick for the GT-Line body kit: it reads sportier than the darker shades and holds up better against the gloss black trim.
Across the three grades, Pure is the lowest-insurance and the most frugal on paper, with 14-inch alloys that help it top the MPG and CO2 charts across the range. It arrives with the full 8-inch Touchscreen Navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Rear Parking Sensors, and a Reversing Camera System as standard. Kia's full suite of active safety features is included too: Lane Keep Assist, Lane Follow Assist 1.0, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, and Autonomous Emergency Braking.
GT-Line adds the body kit and interior styling, 16-inch alloys, LED headlights, privacy glass, alloy pedals, electrically folding heated mirrors with LED indicators, and a rear-passenger USB-C port. GT-Line S sits at the top of the lineup with Front Heated Seats, a Heated Steering Wheel, Sunroof, Smart Entry with Start/Stop button, and a Wireless Mobile Phone Charger. It also adds the upgraded Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 1.5 (with Junction Turning) and Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist as standard. Specifications apply to the current Kia UK Picanto model year (Kia UK specification brochure dated August 2026). Equipment on individual vehicles should be confirmed with a Vertu colleague.
Only one engine is offered in the Kia Picanto across the UK range: a 1.0-litre GDI petrol unit producing 68bhp at 6,000rpm, with 96 Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. The real decision point sits in the transmission, with a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) both available across every grade. Front-wheel drive is standard; there is no all-wheel-drive option.
On paper, the manual is the quicker and more economical choice. It hits 0-62mph in 14.6 seconds against the AMT's 17.2 seconds, and returns up to 52.3 mpg combined (WLTP) on the Pure trim's 14-inch wheels against the AMT's 51.4mpg. Both transmissions top out at 100mph and share the same 35-litre fuel tank, so refuelling intervals are identical.
But the insurance figures run the other way, and this is where the AMT earns its place in the range. The AMT drops the Pure variant into Insurance Group 1E, the lowest band available in the UK insurance groupings, against 3E for the manual Pure. GT-Line and GT-Line S AMT variants sit in Group 2E against 4E for the manuals. For a young driver or first-car buyer, the AMT's acceleration penalty is usually a cheap trade for a two-group insurance saving.
