Few cars have earned a reputation quite like the Mazda MX-5. As the world's best-selling two-seat sports car, it has spent more than three decades proving that pure driving pleasure needn't come at the cost of everyday usability.
Known globally as the Mazda Miata, the MX-5 is built around Mazda's philosophy of Jinba Ittai - the harmony between horse and rider - every MX-5 begins with a free-revving front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout, 50:50 weight distribution, and a manual gearbox. The result is a lightweight sports car that feels instinctive to drive, turning every journey into something worth looking forward to.
Available as the open-top MX-5 Roadster or the sleek MX-5 RF (Retractable Fastback), both sharing the same Skyactiv technology, you choose the roof that suits your lifestyle - soft-top freedom, or all-season coupe style. The Mazda MX-5 also carries a six-year manufacturer's warranty as standard, and is recognised by both Auto Express and What Car? as an award-winning model.
Step inside and the MX-5's driver-first philosophy is immediately apparent. The cockpit wraps around you snugly, placing every control exactly where you'd want it - including the Multimedia Commander, which sits naturally between driver and passenger so your eyes can stay on the road.
All models come with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, gear shift, and handbrake lever, creating a purposeful feel from the moment you sit down. Trim levels step up from cloth and suede effect seating in the Prime-Line through to Recaro® sports seats trimmed in leather and Alcantara® in the Homura.
Technology is handled by Mazda Connect: an intuitive 8.8" infotainment display offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite navigation with seven years of free map updates, and DAB radio with Bluetooth connectivity. Exclusive-Line and Homura models add a Bose® premium sound system with nine speakers - including in-headrest units - so every drive comes with a premium soundtrack, roof up or down.
Practical touches include heated seats, climate control, cruise control with Intelligent Speed Assist, and dual USB Type-C charging. The MX-5 is a sports car that doesn't ask you to sacrifice day-to-day comfort.
The MX-5's proportions are unmistakable: a long bonnet, short overhangs, and a silhouette that looks as though it's moving even at a standstill. The MX-5 Roadster features a lightweight soft-top convertible roof that can be lowered in seconds, letting you make the most of every sunny day. The MX-5 RF takes a different approach, with a power retractable hardtop that folds electrically in under 13 seconds, delivering coupe refinement with the option of open-air motoring.
Six exterior colours are available - from the iconic Soul Red Crystal to Arctic White, Machine Grey, Aero Grey, Deep Crystal Blue, and Jet Black* - each sitting beautifully on the MX-5's sculpted bodywork. (*Jet Black is not available on the MX-5 RF 184ps Homura.)
All models roll on alloy wheels, with LED headlights and LED daytime running lights as standard across the range. The 184ps Exclusive-Line and Homura grades add Adaptive LED Headlights for intelligent beam control at night. Homura models make a visual statement with 17" BBS alloy wheels and red Brembo front brake calipers.
The MX-5 is offered in three trim levels - Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line, and Homura - each available in both Roadster and RF body styles. The 1.5 132ps engine is available in Prime-Line and Exclusive-Line; the 2.0 184ps engine powers the Exclusive-Line 184ps and Homura. Here's how the key features compare:

Both Skyactiv-G engines are direct-injection petrol units built around a high-compression combustion cycle, delivering impressive fuel efficiency and low CO₂ emissions without blunting the driving experience. The 1.5 Skyactiv-G 132ps keeps the MX-5 at its lightest and most agile, while the 2.0 Skyactiv-G 184ps adds track-focused hardware - an asymmetric limited slip differential, Bilstein dampers, and a front strut brace - for drivers who want more pace. Both engines are paired with Mazda's 6-speed manual gearbox, and both support i-stop and i-ELOOP energy recovery as standard.
Note that the Roadster and RF differ slightly in kerb weight, height, and 0-62mph times, as shown in the table below:
