Exeter Chiefs Fight Back For Stunning French Victory

Exeter Chiefs enjoyed a winning start to its European Champions Cup programme following an astonishing comeback victory against Toulon.

There was no indication of the drama to come when the Vertu Motors-backed side grabbed the lead shortly after the quarter hour mark, with Harvey Skinner running from his own half to score after an interception.

Toulon wasted little time responding however, with Beka Gigashvili and Ben White both crossing in the space of five minutes for the French side and Enzo Herve kicking a conversion and two penalties.

That left Exeter 18-5 down at the break to the three time winners, who had secured the European Challenge Cup title last season following a comfortable victory against Glasgow.

The second half was 20 minutes old before Exeter put the next points on the board, with Max Norey powering over and Henry Slade converting the kick to bring the Chiefs within six points of the lead.

With the clock ticking down towards full time, Exeter seemed to be heading for defeat but Jacques Vermeulenmanaged to push his way over the line to score in the final minute.

It meant the match came down to the final kick, with Slade calmly adding the conversion to secure the points and give the Chiefs a winning start to their European adventure.
