Sunderland remain just outside the play-off places in the EFL Championship after the Vertu Motors-backed side were held to a goalless draw at Swansea.

The Black Cats headed for South Wales on the back of a 3-1 win at home to Norwich, which had ended a run of three successive league defeats to leave Tony Mowbray’s side seventh in the standings.

From the first whistle, Sunderland were on top in the game and were given a boost when the home side had Charlie Patino sent off with an hour of the game still to play.

Swansea then missed a penalty after a foul by Luke O'Nien, with Anthony Patterson producing a fine save to keep the scores level.

Having hit the woodwork during the first half, Sunderland would again go close in the second half as they continued to pile on the pressure and would ultimately have no fewer than 25 shots on goal compared to three for the home side.

Swansea were able to hold on however, with the point leaving Sunderland eighth in the points ahead of the visit of Birmingham this weekend.
