So we're setting the record straight.
Below, we bust some of the most common Motability Scheme myths and share the truth behind each one.
What The Motability Scheme Is
The Motability Scheme lets eligible disabled people exchange their qualifying mobility allowance for a brand-new car, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle, scooter or powered wheelchair.
It's run by Motability Operations under contract to Motability, a registered charity that has supported disabled people since 1978.

Motability Scheme Myths, Busted
It's Only For Wheelchair Users
The myth: you have to use a wheelchair, or be unable to walk at all, to qualify.
The truth: Motability Scheme eligibility is based on receiving a qualifying mobility allowance at the higher or enhanced rate, not on any single condition. Many customers lease an ordinary car rather than an adapted one.
You Have To Be The Driver
The myth: the Motability Scheme is only for people who drive themselves.
The truth: you don't need to drive at all. You can join as a passenger, and you can name up to three drivers on the insurance. Parents and carers of disabled children can apply too.
It's A Free Car
The myth: the Motability Scheme hands out free cars.
The truth: it's a lease, not a giveaway. You exchange your qualifying mobility allowance, which your allowance provider pays to Motability every four weeks. Some models also need a one-off Advance Payment at the start.
You Can Keep The Car
The myth: the vehicle is yours to own or buy once the lease ends.
The truth: at the end of your lease you hand the vehicle back, then choose your next one. Buying your Motability Scheme vehicle at the end isn't an option.
Insurance And Servicing Cost Extra
The myth: you're left paying separately for running costs.

You're Stuck With Basic Models
The myth: the Motability Scheme only offers small, entry-level cars.

Adaptations Cost A Fortune
The myth: fitting adaptations makes the Motability Scheme unaffordable.
The truth: a broad range of adaptations is available, from simple steering aids to advanced driving controls and transfer solutions. Many can be fitted at no extra cost, depending on the adaptation.
It'll Affect My Other Benefits
The myth: joining the Motability Scheme reduces your other benefits.
The truth: Personal Independence Payment and Disability Living Allowance aren't means-tested, or affected by your earnings or savings. Joining simply directs your mobility allowance towards your lease, and your other benefits stay as they are.
They'll Track My Every Move
The myth: a tracker in the car means someone is watching everywhere you go.
The truth: from April 2026, new customers have a telematics device fitted. It helps Motability confirm vehicles are being used by, or for the benefit of, the disabled customer, in line with the scheme's fair usage rules.
