The Last Ride Before Winter
The Last Ride Before Winter

There's a particular feeling that arrives with the first properly cold morning. The light turns gold and low, the roads empty of summer traffic, and every rider you know starts checking the forecast a little too often. Autumn is closing in, and with it comes the ride that matters most: the last proper run of the year.

Why the final ride out means so much

For a lot of us, the season doesn't end when the temperature drops. It ends when we say it does, with one more run out and a coffee at the far end. That final ride carries a bit more weight than a random Sunday in July. It's the full stop on a summer of miles, the story you'll retell all winter, and the reason the bike stays a little cleaner in the garage until spring.

Riding solo has its own quiet reward. But there's something about a group heading out together on a crisp morning, breath fogging in the car park, that a lone blast can't quite match.

Picking your moment

Autumn riding rewards the organised. Mornings start damp and frosty, so give the roads time to dry and aim for the warmer window in the middle of the day. Daylight is shorter now, so plan a route that gets you home before the light fades and the cold creeps back in.

Keep the run realistic. A shorter loop ridden well beats an epic that leaves half the group tired, cold, and racing the sunset. Choose roads you love, build in a proper stop, and let the day breathe.

The cafe stop is the whole point

Ask any group of riders what makes a good ride out and the cafe run comes up fast. The stop is where the day actually happens. Bikes line up outside, helmets come off, and the ride gets picked apart over a bacon roll and a strong coffee.

Pick somewhere with room to park up, a warm corner, and a menu worth the miles. Half the fun is arriving cold and leaving thawed, with a plan already forming for next season.

Make us a stop on your run

Wherever your last run takes you, build a stop in with us. Vertu Motorcycles is an easy place to pull in, warm the hands, and talk bikes before the next leg of the route.

The second Saturday of every month at Vertu Ducati Sunderland is worth timing your ride around, when our open meet brings riders together over coffee. You'll spot everything from BMW Motorrad tourers to Ducati sports bikes and Honda commuters, all swapping routes, stories, and the odd bit of good-natured wind-up. New faces are always welcome, whatever you ride.

A few autumn riding reminders

Cold tyres and damp roads ask for a gentler first few miles, so warm everything through before you push on. Layer up properly, because wind chill at speed bites harder than the thermometer suggests. Pack for changeable weather, and check your lights, your chain, and your tyre pressures before you set off.

If your bike is due some attention before the colder months, the team can get it sorted. You can find your nearest Vertu Motorcycles dealership and book it in ahead of the winter layup.

See you on the second Saturday

The clocks go back soon and the gritters aren't far behind. So pick your day, round up your group, and if your route can take in our meet, even better. There's a whole winter ahead to talk about it.
