The return of the ultra-compact, urban two-seater is here, with some massive advancements in technology, safety and even suspension.
smart has introduced the #2 to meet the mobility needs of modern urban architecture and beyond. With resemblance to its previous iterations – notably the upright stance, flat nose and wheels pushed right out into the corners – the #2 has a unique yet unmistakable charm to it; and measuring in at just 2,746mm in length, the brand’s signature dinky dimensions and original two-seater concept are proudly on display.
Underneath the shiny new shell, the two-seater uses an evolution of smart’s “Tridion Cell” concept, which functions as a rigid, high-strength steel cage, designed to resist bending, breaking or twisting in the event of an impact. Similar to that of a race car’s roll cage, this internal structure will absorb and evenly distribute crash energy away from passengers.
As well as a safety-focused shell, the smart #2 introduces five-link rear suspension, supporting a confident and composed drive in urban areas and on larger roads – combined with a floor-mounted battery, the suspension grants the driver direct steering geometry and plenty of comfort.
The smart #2 has an official WLTP range of 180 miles, and can be charged at speeds of up to 65kW, meaning adventuring outside of the city is also on the cards – and there's no need to worry about it either; you’ll be charged right back up from 10-80% battery in just 20 minutes.
Despite its smaller stature, the interior remains spacious and practical, with usable solutions for everyday travel, such as the wireless phone charger integrated into the centre console. The cockpit flows around the driver in a sleek S-curve, integrating a 10.1-inch touchscreen and 8.8-inch driver display in intuitive positions.
With a bench seat you can easily slide across and an impressively tight turning circle at just 6.95 metres, the smart #2 is the perfect little city car, whether you’re parked right up against a wall or packed into a tight space. There is also a sizeable 305-litre boot - with an unusual split tailgate for ease of access no matter your surroundings.
Announced for the UK market are two core trim lines of the #2 – Pure and Premium – alongside a limited Couture Edition.
Smart #2 Pure is the starting point, with essential features including Vehicle-to-Load capability, smart Pilot Assist and adaptive cruise control. LED headlights and taillights round off the package, proving the car’s suitability for driving in and outside of the city.
Smart #2 Premium is built on this package, with 11kW AC charging and a heated driver’s seat – further features include a glass roof, a seven-speaker Sennheiser sound system and more colour configuration options.
The Coture edition is limited to 999 units in Europe, with unique, matt white exterior paint, alloys and a numbered interior badge.
With the full UK price list set to be announced later in the year, all that is known for now is that the smart #2 is set to come in at less than £20,000.
