The A1 motorcycle licence - also referred to as the motorcycle A1 licence - is the traditional starting point for UK riders who want more than a moped. Available from age 17, it covers light motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW; a category that launched more riding careers than any other.
These are not just beginner bikes. The 125-motorcycle category includes machines like the Honda CB125R, the Honda MSX125 (the Grom), the KTM Duke 125, and the Kawasaki Z125. They’re genuinely fun, capable bikes that suit commuting, weekend riding, and learning the craft of motorcycling.

Why the 125-motorcycle category is the most popular starting point
A 125 motorbike sits at a sweet spot for new riders. The power limit keeps things approachable for a first motorcycle, the running costs are low, and insurance for a 125 bike is generally more affordable than larger categories.
The best motorcycle for beginners on the A1 licence depends on riding style. The best motorbike for beginners who commute tends to be something practical and upright – the Honda CB125F is just that. It's particularly recommended as a great learner bike and general commuter. The Honda MSX125 (or Grom) and CB125R are great choices for a bit more fun and athleticism.
From BMW, the 11kW version of the CE02 is a specially created bike for the A1 licence and is a great option for urban commuting.
The difference between A1 and A2 motorcycle licence
The A1 licence covers bikes up to 125cc and 11kW. The A2 licence, available from age 19, raises the power limit to 35kW and removes the 125cc cap, opening up a much wider range of mid-range motorcycles. Two years on an A1 motorcycle counts towards the progressive route to A2.
