BMW F 450 RR revealed: a 48 bhp supersport entry into the RR world

BMW Motorrad has pulled the covers off the BMW F 450 RR, a brand-new lightweight supersport bike built to bring full RR character to the A2 licence class. It sits alongside the recently launched F 450 GS adventure model as the second bike to use BMW Motorrad's new 420cc parallel-twin engine, and it is the smallest, most accessible RR the brand has ever built.

For A2 riders eyeing a proper supersport, and for experienced motorcyclists after a lighter weekend bike that still delivers RR DNA, this reveal is a significant one. Here is everything we know so far.

An A2-legal supersport with full RR DNA

Developed as a standalone model within the F 450 family, the BMW F 450 RR has been tuned specifically for twisty roads and track days. Its design language takes clear cues from the flagship S 1000 RR, with a split-face front, winglets, a signature daytime running light, a teardrop tank and a short tail that leave no doubt about which family it belongs to.

Markus Flasch, CEO of BMW Motorrad, describes the bike as "light, direct, and precise to ride," calling it "the perfect entry into the world of BMW RR motorcycles."

Engine and performance

A newly developed 420cc parallel-twin engine sits at the centre of this A2 supersport, first seen in the F 450 GS and here retuned for sharper throttle response. It produces 35kW (48bhp) at 8,750rpm and 43Nm of torque at 6,750rpm, with 80 percent of that torque available from just 3,000rpm.

A 135-degree crankpin offset gives the engine an uneven firing interval and a distinctive sound, while a counter-rotating balance shaft keeps vibration low. BMW's WMTC fuel consumption figure works out at roughly 74mpg, giving the 14-litre tank a usable range of more than 215 miles. The service interval is a standard 6,200 miles and the engine meets Euro 5+ regulations.

Chassis, brakes and rider electronics

Underneath the bodywork, a welded tubular steel space frame uses the engine as a load-bearing element to keep the whole package compact. A 43mm KYB upside-down telescopic fork handles the front end, and a hollow-cast aluminium double-sided swingarm with a central KYB spring strut controls the rear. Opt for the Sport suspension and the fork gains adjustable rebound and compression damping.

Braking comes from a floating 310mm front disc gripped by a Brembo four-piston monobloc caliper, backed up by a 240mm rear disc with a ByBre single-piston caliper. Rain, Road and Race riding modes are standard, along with ABS Pro, Dynamic Brake Control, Dynamic Traction Control and engine drag torque control. Upgrade to Riding Modes Pro and a configurable Race Pro mode unlocks three dedicated Sport screens on the 6.5-inch TFT display, complete with a lap timer.

Design, ergonomics and everyday use

Clip-on handlebars mounted to a forged aluminium triple clamp set up a sporty, front-wheel-oriented riding position, balanced by a two-piece seat at 790mm. Riders who want more or less reach to the ground can drop the seat to 775mm or raise it to 810mm through BMW Motorrad's accessory range.

Despite the racetrack focus, the BMW F 450 RR is kitted out for everyday riding. Heated grips, adjustable hand levers, LED lighting, Bluetooth connectivity through the BMW Motorrad Connected app and a USB-C port in the cockpit all come as standard. A reversible shift pattern is a nice track-day touch for riders who want it.
