The new BMW R 1300 GS marks the biggest shake-up the GS platform has seen in years, and it lands at Vertu with almost every part of the bike reworked.
A new steel shell frame and repackaged drivetrain shed 12kg from the outgoing model, while the familiar GS stance stays instantly recognisable.
Power comes from BMW's largest boxer yet, a 1,300cc flat twin built on the ShiftCam variable valve system. It is the most powerful and useable boxer engine BMW has built, with plenty of drive low down for town riding and real pace once the road opens up.
The chassis has been reworked just as thoroughly. A new EVO Telelever front end and EVO Paralever rear end sharpen precision and stability, and the optional Dynamic Suspension Adjustment automatically adjusts damping for solo riding, a pillion, or a fully loaded set of panniers.
Standard equipment is generous too. Every BMW R 1300 GS comes with a tyre pressure monitor, KeylessRide and heated grips, alongside four riding modes, Road, Rain, Eco, and Enduro, covering everything from commuting to off-road exploring.
The new LED Matrix headlight brings another visible change, combining high and low beam into a single lens, with the option to add Headlight Pro to light the corner ahead as you lean into a bend.
A 19-litre tank and average consumption of 59mpg give the GS a realistic range of up to 246 miles, useful figures for anyone planning a full day in the saddle.
Riders wanting more range and more presence have the BMW R 1300 GS Adventure. Built on the same platform, the Adventure trades some of the GS's agility for a bigger reach and a more commanding stance.
Its aluminium fuel tank holds 30 litres against the standard bike's 19, giving a tank-to-tank range beyond 300 miles, according to Bennetts BikeSocial's review of the model.
The Adventure also adds wire-spoked wheels, a taller seat, and around 20mm of extra suspension travel as standard, along with engine guards and a centre stand fitted from the factory, according to the same source.
For longer trips, optional aluminium panniers add 73 litres of luggage space, and a matching top box brings the total to 110 litres, extendable by a further 20 litres with side case extensions, per the same review.
