The Kia EV5 is the family-sized electric SUV that sits between the compact EV3 and the seven-seat EV9. That gives Kia a dedicated five-seater built for the school run, the weekly shop and the longer trips in between. It rides on Kia's Electric Global Modular Platform, the same 400-volt architecture underpinning the wider Kia electric cars range.
That platform is what gives the EV5 its usable interior space and a low, planted feel on the road. A 2,750mm wheelbase pushes the wheels towards each corner, freeing up more than a metre of rear legroom, so three adults in the back is a realistic proposition rather than a compromise.
Every EV5 pairs an 81.4kWh battery with a single-speed automatic, and the range spans four distinct trims: Air, GT-Line, Storm and GT-Line S. Air and Storm are front-wheel drive, while GT-Line and GT-Line S add the option of all-wheel drive for drivers who want the extra traction and pace.
Front-wheel-drive versions cover up to 329 miles on a single charge (WLTP combined), a figure that comfortably clears a week of commuting for most drivers before a top-up is due. For anyone stepping into their first electric Kia, that combination of real range and genuine family space is the EV5's core appeal.
Vertu is one of the UK's Kia retailers, and our colleagues can talk you through where each trim sits and which suits your driving. Buyers who mostly cover short local runs will find the front-wheel-drive Air more than enough. Those regularly loaded with people and kit, or towing, have a clear reason to look at the all-wheel-drive GT-Line and GT-Line S.
Step up into the EV5 and the first thing you notice is the panoramic display running across the dashboard. A 12.3-inch driver cluster, a 5.3-inch climate screen and a 12.3-inch touchscreen sit side by side as one continuous surface. It's the kind of layout that keeps navigation, media and cabin controls all within a glance rather than buried in menus.
That sense of space carries into how the cabin adapts. Fold the 60:40 split rear seats and you open up a two-metre loading area, and behind them sits a 566-litre boot, with a further 44 litres in the frunk under the bonnet for charging cables. A ski hatch, under-floor storage and a height-adjustable luggage board mean the load space flexes around what you're actually carrying.
Comfort climbs steadily as you move up the range. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel feature across every EV5, GT-Line adds heated outer rear seats and rear climate control, and Storm brings front ventilation for warmer days. GT-Line S goes furthest with Premium Relaxation Seats, an Ergo Motion driver's seat and a massage function that turns a long motorway stint into something closer to rest.
Higher trims lean into the technology, too. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard throughout, while GT-Line S adds a customisable head-up display, fingerprint recognition and an eight-speaker Harman Kardon system. Wrap-around ambient lighting on GT-Line and GT-Line S shifts with your drive mode, a small touch you notice most on an evening drive.
Walk up to the EV5 and Kia's latest design language announces itself. An upright, robust SUV stance is softened by the Digital Tiger Face up front and Star Map lighting that links the headlights and tail-lights in one continuous signature. It reads as a proper family SUV rather than a jacked-up hatchback, and it looks the part on a driveway.
Those looks change character with trim. Air runs on 18-inch alloys with satin chrome detailing and black wheel arches. GT-Line and GT-Line S move to 19-inch wheels with GT-Line styling, gloss black arches and automatic flush door handles that sit smooth against the bodywork. GT-Line S adds a panoramic sunroof with a tilting and sliding function for an airier cabin.
Storm takes a darker, more deliberate path. It comes with premium paint included as standard, unlike the rest of the range where it's an option. Its 19-inch wheels pair with an exclusive Dark Ocean Blue finish, giving it a distinct look you won't find on the other trims.
Across the range you get LED headlights with Adaptive Driving Beam, LED daytime running lights and rain-sensing wipers as standard. The equipment that matters on a dark, wet commute is there whichever EV5 you choose.
The table below shows how equipment steps up across the four Kia EV5 trims, covering the features and technology that separate them rather than the performance figures, which follow in the next section.
