The new Toyota RAV4 gives you class-leading electric range for a plug-in hybrid SUV, up to 85 miles on a single charge (WLTP), so most days can run on battery power alone with zero tailpipe emissions whilst driving. Every grade comes with Toyota Safety Sense and a 12.9-inch Toyota Smart Connect+ system as standard, whilst the GR Sport flagship adds a 309hp all-wheel-drive powertrain, wider fenders and tuned suspension for genuine performance credentials. Whether you're commuting on electric power through the week or towing up to 2,000kg at the weekend, there's a RAV4 built around how you actually drive.

The New Toyota RAV4 arrives as a plug-in hybrid only, and it uses that focus to push electric-only range further than almost any SUV in its class. That means up to 85 miles on a single charge (WLTP). For a family car this size, that covers a whole working week of local driving before the petrol engine is called on at all.
That range is the headline change on the latest generation RAV4, roughly double what the outgoing plug-in managed. Toyota has retired the self-charging RAV4 from the new range and built this car around electric-first driving, pairing a 22.7kWh battery with the proven 2.5-litre petrol hybrid engine for longer trips.
Vertu offers the New Toyota RAV4 across four grades, Icon, Design, Excel and GR Sport, with front-wheel drive on the 272 hp models and all-wheel drive on the 309 hp Excel and GR Sport. Whichever you choose, you get five seats, a 446-litre boot and Toyota Safety Sense as standard.
Drivers who can charge at home are the natural fit here. With up to 85 miles of electric range on tap, the daily school run, commute and shopping trip can happen on battery power alone, with zero tailpipe emissions whilst driving. That leaves the petrol engine for weekends away and longer motorway miles.
Toyota invented the compact crossover with the original RAV4 in 1994, and this sixth-generation car returns to that role as a five-door crossover SUV engineered for recreation and everyday family use alike. The design is deliberately robust, with pronounced wheel arches and a high, boxy roofline that pays off inside as genuine head and shoulder room.
That practical shape sits on a 2,690mm wheelbase, giving five occupants space to spread out and a 446-litre boot behind them. The 60:40 split-folding rear seats fold flat with no loading lip, so a bike, a flat-pack or a full holiday load goes in without a fight.
Underpinning the range is a single powertrain philosophy: the A25A-FXS 2.5-litre petrol plug-in hybrid, tuned to run as an electric vehicle for the vast majority of journeys. Choose front-wheel drive and you get 272 hp; the all-wheel-drive version adds a rear motor for 309 hp and a genuinely quick 5.8-second 0-62mph time.
The result is a car that behaves like an EV on the daily commute and a conventional hybrid on a long tow or a Highland road trip. For a household weighing up whether they are ready to go fully electric, the RAV4 answers the range-anxiety question before it is asked, keeping a full tank in reserve at all times.
Sit in the RAV4 and you're working with a 12.9-inch Toyota Smart Connect+ multimedia display paired with a 12.3-inch digital driver's screen, the pair reading as one clear, modern cockpit. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard across the range, so your phone connects the moment you sit down, without a cable trailing across the console.
That technology sits in a cabin that gets more generous as you climb the grades. Every RAV4 has a heated steering wheel and heated front seats, while Design adds ventilated front seats, driver's seat memory and a wireless charging pad. Excel steps up again with heated rear seats, a Head-Up Display and dual wireless chargers, useful when two phones need topping up at once.
Above that comfort kit, the light and space are what passengers notice first. A Toyota Skyview panoramic roof features on Excel, while GR Sport swaps in a glass moonroof, and both flood the five-seat cabin with daylight. Rear passengers get their own air vents and USB-C charging, the small touches that keep a long journey calm.
The audio and storage round things out for the way families actually use the car. Excel and GR Sport carry a JBL Premium Sound System with a subwoofer, and dual-zone climate control, a lockable glovebox and generous door bins feature throughout. It is a cabin that does the practical work quietly, then rewards you with the premium details when you go looking for them.
The RAV4's exterior leans into its SUV stance, with LED dual-beam projector headlights and LED dual daytime running lights giving it a sharp, recognisable signature after dark. Privacy glass on the rear windows, aluminium roof rails and a gloss black rear spoiler feature across the range, so even the entry Icon looks purposeful rather than plain.
Those roof rails point to the RAV4's practical streak. With 187mm of ground clearance and a body designed for light off-road use, the all-wheel-drive versions back up the rugged styling with genuine capability. Downhill Assist Control and an Auto Limited Slip Differential lock feature on those AWD grades.
Wheel and finish choices step up through the range. Icon rides on 18-inch dark grey machined-face alloys, Design and Excel move to 20-inch wheels, and GR Sport gets its own 20-inch machined-face design under 12.5mm wider fenders. GR Sport also brings a motorsport-inspired grille and bumper treatment, giving the flagship a noticeably wider, more planted stance.
That wider body makes GR Sport the largest car in the range, at 4,645mm long and 1,880mm wide against 4,600mm and 1,855mm for the other grades. All share the same 1,685mm height and 2,690mm wheelbase, so the extra presence comes without any loss of the RAV4's easy-to-place footprint.
The New Toyota RAV4 comes in four grades, and the table below shows the equipment and features that separate them, from wheels through to safety kit.

Equipment reflects the current New Toyota RAV4 specification from Toyota's UK grade pages. Your local dealership can confirm the exact specification of any car.
For most buyers, Design lands as the value sweet spot, adding the wireless charger, ventilated seats and larger wheels over Icon. Excel is the one to choose if you want the full technology set, bringing the Head-Up Display, 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor and JBL audio. GR Sport, meanwhile, turns the RAV4 into a properly sporting flagship with its wider body and tuned suspension.
Every New Toyota RAV4 uses the same 2.5-litre plug-in hybrid powertrain, offered in two forms, and the table below sets out the performance, charging and economy figures for each.

WLTP figures are provided for comparison purposes and may not reflect real-world driving. Electric range, economy and emissions vary by grade, wheel size and conditions. DC rapid charging is fitted to Excel and GR Sport.
The two powertrains suit two different drivers. The front-wheel-drive 272 hp car goes furthest on electricity, up to 85 miles, making it the pick for a home-charging household that wants to run on battery power all week. The 309 hp all-wheel-drive version trades a little range for a 5.8-second 0-62mph sprint, a 2,000kg towing limit and the traction to handle a wet slope or a muddy showground with confidence.
