The Volkswagen ID. Polo is a completely new car wearing a familiar name. Despite the shared badge, it is mechanically unrelated to the petrol Polo it is sold alongside: a ground-up electric vehicle built on Volkswagen's MEB+ platform, with front-wheel drive from a newly developed APP290 electric motor. World-premiered in April 2026 and launched in September 2026, it is the seventh generation of the Polo nameplate. The product line has sold more than 20 million units across six previous generations, and this is the first all-electric Polo in that history.
Two battery options are offered. The entry-level 37 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pairs with 85 kW (116 PS) or 99 kW (135 PS) motor outputs. WLTP range on these variants is up to 207 miles (334 km) on the current forecast. The 52 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery pairs with a 155 kW (211 PS) motor for a WLTP range of up to 282 miles (454 km). A 166 kW (226 PS) GTI variant - the first all-electric GTI in the badge's history - is scheduled to follow in 2027.
Three equipment lines open the range: Trend as the entry-level grade, Life pitched at comfort, and Style as the top of the range. The ID. Polo is also the first production model to launch Volkswagen's new "Pure Positive" design language. Chief Designer Andreas Mindt and his team have built it around three stated pillars: stability, likeability and (in their own words) "secret sauce". For UK buyers, the technical story is more useful than the design philosophy: this is a supermini-sized EV with higher-segment features designed in from the start.
The ID. Polo's cabin is organised around a pair of horizontally arranged displays: a 10-inch Digital Cockpit directly in front of the driver, and a 13-inch Innovision touchscreen set into the centre of the dashboard. Both displays sit on a single visual axis, so the instruments and the central infotainment read as one connected panel rather than two separate screens. A notable feature is the Retro display mode, standard on every grade, which transforms the Digital Cockpit into a visual style modelled on the late Mk1 Golf.
Physical controls have been deliberately kept. The central climate functions (temperature, blower, air conditioning on/off, defroster, rear window heater) sit as easy-grip buttons in the centre console rather than being buried in the touchscreen. A rotary control for audio volume and track selection is positioned to be reached from both front seats. The multifunction steering wheel has been redesigned with clearly grouped button panels either side of the airbag.
Boot capacity has grown by 25 per cent against the MQB-platform petrol Polo, to 441 litres with the rear seats upright and 1,240 litres with them folded. Textile fabrics in the seats and doors, headliner and carpets are made from rPET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate), and the Style seats use SEAQUAL yarn, whose base material is recovered ocean plastic. Optional equipment includes a Harman Kardon sound system (425 watts, ten speakers plus subwoofer), a panoramic glass roof, and electrically adjustable 12-way front seats with a pneumatic massage function.
On the outside, the ID. Polo is the first production car to carry Volkswagen's new Pure Positive design language. It measures 4,053 mm long, 1,816 mm wide and 1,530 mm high, with a 2,600 mm wheelbase. That makes it fractionally shorter than the outgoing MQB-platform petrol Polo (4,074 mm), but noticeably wider, taller, and with a longer wheelbase. The MEB+ platform's packaging is what has freed up the extra interior space, including the 441-litre boot.
The front end carries pupil-like LED units flanking a horizontal glass-covered bar between the headlights, with vertical air curtains at the sides. On the Style grade, the signature is more pronounced. The upgrades include IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights with an illuminated LED light strip, 3D LED tail light clusters with dynamic turn signals, illuminated door handle recesses, and illuminated VW logos at the front and rear. A roof spoiler sits above a rear window that extends far into the C-pillars, which Volkswagen's design team notes is a nod to the original Mk1 Golf.
Aerodynamics are quoted at a Cd value of 0.264. Alloy wheels are available in 17, 18 or 19 inches, with a track width of 1,522 mm and flared wheel arches that lend the car its stance. The Trend grade uses 17-inch steel wheels with covers as standard, while the Style grade comes with 17-inch Edinburgh alloy wheels (black, diamond-cut finish) as standard. All colour options and UK-specific premium paint choices should be confirmed with a Vertu Volkswagen colleague.
Three equipment lines are offered at launch: Trend, Life and Style. The Trend grade covers the fundamentals. Standard safety includes 88 kW DC quick-charging, Side Assist (with Rear Traffic Alert and exit warning), Lane Assist including Emergency Assist, and Front Assist Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian and Cyclist Monitoring. Inside, the Trend brings the 10-inch Digital Cockpit, the 13-inch infotainment system, Air Care Climatronic air conditioning, a leatherette multifunction steering wheel, and Keyless Start. Other standard driver assistance includes Oncoming Vehicle Braking with Swerve Support, Advanced Driver Attention Monitor, Dynamic Road Sign Display, and a rain sensor. One-pedal driving and Vehicle-to-Load (PowerSocket) functionality are standard across every grade.
Life adds the equipment that typical day-to-day buyers notice first. On the safety and convenience side, it brings Adaptive Cruise Control, a rear view camera system, front and rear Park Distance Control, and Front Cross Traffic Assist. The cabin adds an automatic anti-dazzle interior mirror and electrically folding exterior mirrors with memory and passenger-mirror lowering. On the technology side, it adds the IDA voice assistant, App-Connect Wireless for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, inductive smartphone charging, a 6+1 speaker audio system, white background lighting, and a variable-height luggage compartment floor. Style sits at the top of the launch range with IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights, illuminated VW logos, 3D LED tail light clusters with dynamic flashing turn signals, cornering light, and 17-inch Edinburgh alloy wheels. The cabin adds comfort sport seats with front seat heating, heated multifunction steering wheel, 30-colour background lighting and ID.Light, two-zone Climatronic, an anti-theft alarm, and Keyless Access with SAFELOCK.

Only one engine type is offered in the ID. Polo - an all-electric drive - but it comes in three power outputs at launch, with a GTI variant following in 2027. The 85 kW (116 PS) motor pairs with a 37 kWh LFP battery and sits in the Trend grade, with 267 Nm of torque. The 99 kW (135 PS) version shares the 37 kWh battery and is offered as the standard engine for Life and Style, with the same 267 Nm torque. The 155 kW (211 PS) motor pairs with the larger 52 kWh NMC battery and is available as an upgrade on Life and Style, producing 290 Nm.
WLTP range is up to 207 miles (334 km) on the 37 kWh battery and up to 282 miles (454 km) on the 52 kWh. All three variants are front-wheel-drive single-speed with a top speed of 99 mph (160 km/h). DC quick-charging is standard across the range: the 37 kWh battery charges from 10 to 80 per cent in around 23 minutes at up to 88 kW. The 52 kWh battery does the same in around 24 minutes at up to 105 kW. AC charging is rated at 11 kW on all variants.
Acceleration figures match the power steps. The Trend hits 0-62 mph in 10.6 seconds. The 99 kW Life and Style variants do the same in 9.5 seconds. The 155 kW variants cut the sprint to 7.1 seconds. One-pedal driving is standard across the range, and the Vehicle-to-Load function (branded PowerSocket) can supply up to 3.6 kW to external 230V devices through a Schuko adapter. The 155 kW variants with the optional ball coupling can tow up to 1,200 kg braked, with the 85 kW and 99 kW variants rated lower. The ball coupling itself takes a drawbar load of 75 kg, enough to transport two e-bikes.
