A Vertu Motors Guide To The EV Government Grant Scheme

Updated on: 24/06/2022

The Government has recently announced changes to the plug-in vehicle grant – find out everything you need to know and how the changes might affect you.

From 14th June 2022, the plug-in car grant scheme will no longer be offered on new electric car orders after successfully increasing the sales of fully electric cars from less than 1,000 in 2011 to almost 100,000 in 2022.

Funding will now be offered to help other vehicles make the switch to electric including taxis, motorcycles, vans and trucks, and wheelchair accessible vehicles.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Government grant:

How much can I get from the grant?

Depending on the size of van you choose, you could receive up to £5,000 towards the cost of a large electric van or up to £2,500 for a small electric van. Motorcycles with an RRP of less than £10,000 could be eligible for up to £500 towards the cost.

Do I need to apply for the grant?

No.

The beauty of the grant is that you don’t have to do a single thing!

Your local Vertu Motors dealership will do it all for you. Just read the terms and conditions to double-check if the grant amount has already been taken off the advertising price, or if the grant is still to be discounted.

What vehicles are eligible?

- Vans

- Motorcycles

- Mopeds

- Taxis

- Large vans and trucks

How do I know if my electric van is eligible?

Vans that have C02 emissions of 50g/km or less and can travel at least 60 miles without creating any emissions are included in the grant. Morotcyles with no C02 emissions and can travel at least 31 miles between charges are also eligible for the grant.

This includes:

- Mercedes-Benz eVito

- Mercedes-Benz eSprinter

- Toyota Proace Electric

- Volkswagen e-Transporter

- SEAT MO e-Scooter

Will the Government help with the cost of installing a charge point?

The EV Chargepoint Grant replaced the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) from 1 April 2022 and focuses on more support for homeowners in flats and rented accommodation. With the scheme you could claim up to £350 towards the cost of installing a home charge point.

To qualify for the EV Chargepoint Grant you must:

- Live in a rented property or own a flat.

- Have access to dedicated off-street-parking.

- Own, lease, or have use of an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle that qualifies for the grant.

- Have not already claimed the EV Chargepoint Grant or the previous EVHS grant for your vehicle.

Please note: you will no longer be able to claim two chargepoints if you own a second electric vehicle.
